Siemens has officially laid the cornerstone for its new Technology Campus in Erlangen, Germany, marking a significant milestone in the company’s long-term commitment to innovation and the future of technology. This project, a key initiative under the Made for Germany programme, is set to drive the country’s industrial growth, with a focus on power electronics, digitalization, and the industrial metaverse.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by prominent political leaders and business representatives, who witnessed the launch of a project that promises to redefine Germany’s economic future. The Siemens Technology Campus will be a blueprint for industrial innovation, combining automation, artificial intelligence, and digital twins to create solutions that address the rapidly evolving needs of the global market.
A €500 Million Investment to Strengthen Germany’s Economy
Siemens’ investment of €500 million in Erlangen forms part of the company’s global investment strategy, which amounts to €2 billion, with €1 billion earmarked for Germany. This move underscores Siemens’ commitment to maintaining Germany’s position as a global leader in technology and innovation.
The first phase of the project will see the construction of a state-of-the-art logistics and automation centre designed to foster flexible automation and workspace for up to 300 people. With 7,000 square meters of space, this facility will help drive the digital transformation in the industrial sector.
The Industrial Metaverse: A Groundbreaking Concept
A key feature of the Technology Campus is its focus on the industrial metaverse. This virtual environment allows companies to simulate, test, and optimise their processes, products, and systems using digital twins and artificial intelligence. It offers companies the ability to optimise their operations before implementing them in the real world, significantly reducing risk and improving efficiency.
Roland Busch, President and CEO of Siemens AG, emphasised the significance of the Technology Campus: “The Siemens Technology Campus in Erlangen is a lighthouse project of the Made for Germany initiative because our colleagues at the location are a role model for Germany’s innovative power and competitiveness. Here, we’ve got superior products and a radical approach to customer value coupled with a relentless focus on digitalization, automation and artificial intelligence. With these success factors, we’re securing Germany’s economic future.”
Government and Regional Support
Joachim Herrmann, Bavarian State Minister of the Interior, expressed his support for the campus, calling it “a clear signal for Germany, Bavaria, and Erlangen,” and stated that it would strengthen Bavaria’s position as a leading technology region. The project will also provide significant employment opportunities for around 3,000 people working at the Erlangen site, across areas such as production, research, development, and administration.
Sustainability: A Core Focus
Sustainability and digitalisation have been central to the planning and development of the Siemens Technology Campus. From the outset, the buildings have been designed to achieve net-zero emissions, with an innovative green energy infrastructure and energy storage solutions being developed in collaboration with the city of Erlangen.
Siemens has already begun integrating digital building technology solutions into the project. The use of green energy during construction activities, including the demolition of existing buildings, highlights the company’s commitment to sustainable practices. Siemens ensured that 96 percent of the materials from the demolition were recycled, helping to avoid 70 tons of CO2 emissions and 24,000 litres of diesel oil.
A Future-Focused Campus for Innovation and Research
By 2027, the Technology Campus will also house a development and innovation hub focused on power electronics, marking the second phase of the project. The new facility will contribute to the development of next-generation converters and controls that will steer systems and machines with even greater precision and efficiency.
Erlangen’s mayor, Dr. Florian Janik, expressed his excitement about the project, stating: “The Siemens Technology Campus is also a lighthouse project for Erlangen. It will further strengthen our city as a science and innovation hub and create a living environment for talents and companies. We’re proud to be a partner in this future-oriented project, which combines sustainability and digitalization in an exemplary manner.”
