Schlitz Plant of Pfeifer Group leads the CLT market with key investments and quality focus

The global construction industry has faced significant economic pressures, yet one sector continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience: sustainable timber construction. This is nowhere more apparent than at the Pfeifer Group‘s state-of-the-art Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) production facility in Schlitz, Germany, which is successfully navigating challenging economic currents with a healthy, steady order book.

While the broader construction market is experiencing a slump, the increasing acceptance of mass timber—driven by the urgent need for low-carbon building solutions—is translating directly into high demand for Pfeifer’s CLT products. This sustained order volume is keeping the Schlitz plant’s three-shift operation running reliably, with plans to implement this full operational model year-round starting in 2026 to maximise production capacity and meet anticipated future demand.

In a significant move that underscores its commitment to sustainability and local community relations, the Pfeifer Group is making a substantial investment in modern environmental controls at the Schlitz site. By the end of September, the plant will install a new electrostatic precipitator. This cutting-edge system is designed to drastically reduce dust emissions from the production process, reinforcing the plant’s position as a responsible corporate citizen.

“This is an important investment in permanently reducing emission levels,” notes Plant Manager Sebastian Eggel. “Close coordination with residents and authorities is an integral part of the site strategy. It demonstrates our long-term commitment not only to product quality but also to the health and environment of our neighbours.” This investment addresses a key concern for large-scale timber processing facilities, showcasing how the industry is actively integrating advanced technology to ensure sustainable manufacturing alongside sustainable construction.

Beyond environmental investment, the Schlitz facility is focused on operational excellence and workforce development, key differentiators in a competitive market.

ISO 9001 Certification

Pfeifer is planning a major milestone in the fourth quarter with the upcoming ISO 9001 certification audit. This internationally recognised standard for Quality Management Systems (QMS) is a significant undertaking. Achieving it will establish Schlitz as the first Pfeifer site to receive the ISO 9001 distinction, setting a new, rigorous benchmark for quality assurance, consistency, and customer satisfaction across all production processes. This move provides clients with enhanced confidence in the consistent performance and reliability of Pfeifer’s CLT elements, further cementing the product’s appeal for large, complex commercial and residential projects.

Strengthening the workforce and leadership pipeline

Recognising that operational success depends on skilled personnel, Pfeifer is strengthening its team structure and commitment to training:

  • New team leader level: The introduction of a dedicated team leader role across core areas—joinery, raw panel production, mechanics, and electrical engineering—is designed to enhance internal communication and operational efficiency. These leaders serve as a vital link between the production floor and management, streamlining workflows and accelerating problem-solving.
  • Focus on diversity: Encouragingly, the plant has seen the proportion of women in its workforce rise to between 10 and 15 per cent, including a female team leader already in a key supervisory role. This diversity initiative is crucial for attracting talent and bringing varied perspectives to the technical complexities of CLT manufacturing.
  • Training for the future: The Schlitz site is firmly establishing itself as a training hub for the mass timber sector. A new technical trainer now oversees both the Schlitz and Lauterbach plants, centralising expertise. The plant recently celebrated its first apprentice graduate in the electrical department and currently has apprentices gaining practical experience in both woodworking mechanics and general mechanics. Further apprenticeship positions have already been advertised for the 2026 intake, securing the pipeline of skilled technicians for the growing CLT sector.

“Schlitz is establishing itself as a training location with excellent prospects for the skilled workers of tomorrow,” states Sebastian Eggel, highlighting the long-term strategic value of the training programme.

The long-term outlook for the Schlitz plant is focused on continuous development and expansion. Goals include increasing production volumes, optimising existing manufacturing processes, and strategically expanding on-site storage capacity.

Furthermore, the plant is building up sophisticated in-house expertise on new CLT product applications, which is essential for providing superior technical support to architects, engineers, and developers. The exploration of artificial intelligence (AI) in production is also opening up new opportunities for enhanced efficiency and quality control.

On the logistics front, the participation in the ‘Starship Alliance’ project is set to introduce greater efficiency and coordination in the complex logistics chain required to deliver oversized CLT elements to construction sites across Europe.

The tangible success of CLT is evident in the project pipeline. New construction like a supermarket in Griesheim, Germany, highlights how sustainable timber is moving from niche, high-profile projects into mainstream, everyday commercial construction. The use of CLT in structures like supermarkets is a powerful signal that mass timber is increasingly becoming the preferred, not just the alternative, building material for speed, cost-efficiency, and carbon reduction across the commercial sector.

In a volatile economic environment, the Pfeifer Group’s Schlitz plant, through strategic investments in environmental compliance, quality management, and skilled labour, is not just surviving—it is building the foundation for sustained leadership in the growing European CLT market.
