SCA Wood-innovation in sawn timber

SCA Wood has built a worldwide reputation on its long-standing heritage in Swedish forestry, sustainable forest management, and the production of high-quality sawn timber. As the UK timber market continues to adapt to economic pressures, policy change, and evolving construction methods, the company remains firmly focused on growth, innovation, and long-term partnerships. To understand how SCA Wood is responding to these dynamics, insights from SCA Wood UK Managing Director Camilla Fish offer a clear picture of resilience within a challenging forestry and construction landscape.

The timber supply chain has faced considerable disruption in recent years. From fluctuating log availability and rising input costs to changes in forest practices, technology adoption, and environmental regulation, the sector has experienced sustained volatility. Despite these pressures, SCA Wood UK has maintained a strong market position and continues to pursue expansion.

According to Fish, the company’s ambition extends beyond protecting existing market share. “The focus is on growing our customer base and expanding into new market segments,” she explains. A key part of this strategy is product diversification, including the introduction of Nordic lodgepole pine. With SCA’s forest holdings of this species increasing steadily, the UK is viewed as a natural and receptive market.

Historically, spruce has dominated the British construction sector, but pine offers comparable structural performance and visual quality. As availability between pine and spruce becomes more balanced, SCA Wood sees an opportunity to reintroduce pine as a viable and sustainable alternative. This is particularly relevant as engineered wood products, MDF, and composite materials have absorbed market share over recent years.

One of SCA Wood’s defining strengths lies in its vertically integrated business model. The company owns and manages extensive forest holdings, operates sawmills, and controls logistics and shipping networks. For UK customers, this integration translates into reliability, consistency, and predictable supply.

Fish notes that ownership of forest resources has been particularly valuable during periods of high log prices and limited spruce availability. With around half of the raw material sourced from SCA’s own forests, the business has been better positioned to maintain supply continuity than many competitors.

In subdued market conditions, UK buyers increasingly prioritise dependable delivery, uniform quality, and long-term partnerships over short-term pricing. SCA’s end-to-end control—from sustainably managed forests through to final delivery—supports customer operational efficiency and helps mitigate risk across the supply chain.

Across the UK and Europe, timber demand has softened, largely due to reduced construction activity. Higher interest rates, slower housing starts, and cautious investment have impacted volumes, particularly in traditional building sectors. However, the market is showing early signs of stabilisation.

Inventory levels across the supply chain are normalising, and pricing volatility has eased compared to the dramatic fluctuations of recent years. While overall demand remains measured, there is continued appetite for high-quality Nordic timber, especially for structural applications, joinery, and engineered building systems.

Fish highlights a shift in customer priorities. Sustainability credentials, product consistency, and long-term value are increasingly influential purchasing factors. This aligns well with SCA Wood’s position as a fully integrated, responsible producer focused on long-term market stability rather than opportunistic gains.

The UK government’s Timber in Construction Roadmap has placed renewed emphasis on increasing the use of timber as a low-carbon building material. While domestic timber production is expected to grow in importance, imported timber remains essential in meeting near- and medium-term demand.

Slow-grown Scandinavian timber offers performance characteristics and durability that are difficult to replicate at scale within the UK. Fish notes that significant increases in domestic planting would be required before homegrown supply could materially reduce import dependence.

SCA Wood supports the Roadmap’s core objectives by supplying sustainably sourced, certified timber with transparent environmental data. Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) provided by SCA track the climate impact of sawn timber from forest to customer, enabling specifiers and developers to make informed decisions aligned with whole-life carbon targets.

The company sees a complementary future where both domestic and imported timber play critical roles in decarbonising construction and expanding timber usage across the built environment.

The growing adoption of off-site manufacturing and timber frame construction is reshaping material requirements across the UK building sector. Major housebuilders are increasingly bringing timber frame operations in-house, driving demand for precision-engineered, high-specification timber.

SCA Wood UK is positioning itself as a reliable partner for this shift. Offsite construction depends on consistency, dimensional accuracy, and dependable delivery schedules—areas where SCA’s integrated supply chain and Nordic production standards provide a strong advantage.

As automation, robotics, and digital manufacturing become more prevalent in timber frame facilities, demand for uniform, predictable raw materials is expected to rise. SCA Wood aims to support this evolution by combining sustainable forestry with responsive customer service and technical expertise.

Looking ahead, SCA Wood UK’s strategy is rooted in resilience, sustainability, and collaboration. By expanding its product portfolio, investing in responsibly managed forests, and aligning with modern construction methods, the company is well positioned to support the UK’s transition towards low-carbon, timber-led building solutions.

In a market increasingly defined by long-term value rather than short-term volatility, SCA Wood’s integrated approach continues to offer stability for customers navigating an evolving forestry and construction landscape.
