Raw material supply dampens upswing, reports proHPL

 Tuesday, March 30, 2021

After a year 2020 marked by the corona crisis, the HPL manufacturers started the current year with courage and optimism. However, the recovery will be slowed by the availability of certain raw materials. In addition, there is no interzum, the world’s leading physical trade fair, as a marketplace for the presentation of new ideas and solutions.

The HPL manufacturers started the year 2021 with verve. After a difficult 2020, the HPL manufacturers quickly got back on track. HPL once again proves its performance characteristics through its enormous range of applications from thin HPL to HPL compact. After the trade fair and shop fitting sector lost a lot of momentum last year, HPL is all the more in demand for applications where the hygienic properties of the surfaces are particularly important, such as: B. in medical and clinical areas.

However, manufacturers are concerned about the supply of raw materials. Here in particular for the chemical precursors for resin production and for decorative papers. “The tense supply of raw materials is therefore not only an issue in the field of thermoplastics, but has also arrived in the area of thermosets,” emphasizes Ralf Olsen, General Manager of the pro-K Industry Association for Semi-Finished Products and Consumer Products made of Plastics e. V., to which the professional group proHPL belongs.

The specialist group very much regrets the cancellation of the physical world trade fair interzum in Cologne. The safety and protection of visitors and exhibitors is the top priority, but the interzum marketplace will be missing this year. Also because this year, in addition to the HPL Adventure World (HPL Gallery), the new language versions of the HPL Compendium and the HPL Academy and its program were to be presented.

High pressure laminate (HPL) according to EN 438 has been used in the construction and furniture sectors for many decades. The European standard EN 438 defines the material, requirements and properties of HPL. HPL is a thermosetting composite material based on resins and paper and has a unique, extremely robust, resistant, modern and very decorative surface.
