Ponsse launches new digital service to upgrade logging emissions

The Finnish pioneer Ponsse in Cut-to-Length (CTL) solutions has rolled out powerful new features—the Emissions Report and enhanced Map Tools—to its premium digital fleet management system, PONSSE Manager Pro. These innovations are designed to give forest machine owners, operators, and office workers unprecedented transparency and control, making daily logging activities more productive and environmentally sound. The updated digital service reinforces Ponsse’s commitment to sustainable logging practices, addressing the industry’s growing need for tools that align business goals with stringent environmental requirements.

In a move that sets a new industry benchmark, Ponsse is the first forest machine manufacturer globally to introduce an integrated, calculated Emissions Report function within its service package. Included in the Manager Pro tier, this feature automatically calculates and visualises the atmospheric CO₂ emissions produced by both harvesters and forwarders.

The data can be viewed and analysed on multiple levels:

  • Machine-level: For individual performance assessment.
  • Site-level: To compare the environmental footprint of different logging sites.
  • Company-level: To provide a comprehensive overview for corporate sustainability reporting over a specified period.

According to Petteri Tuomisto, Ponsse’s Sales Manager of Digital Services, this monitoring capability is a game-changer. “The monitoring of site-specific emissions helps reduce fuel consumption, which effectively supports the meeting of both environmental requirements and business goals,” Tuomisto explains. “Emission reporting also helps to identify which machines are best suited for different logging sites.”

By offering detailed insights into fuel efficiency and carbon output, the report empowers managers to optimise machine allocation and operational planning. This proactive approach not only benefits the environment but also directly impacts the bottom line by minimising wasteful fuel consumption—a major cost factor in harvesting.

The new Map Tools are positioned as a core feature of the PONSSE Manager Pro package, designed to create a “fuller picture” of the logging site for greater operational synergy between harvesters and forwarders.

These tools allow users to visualise critical operational data directly on a map, addressing key logistical challenges in the forest:

  • Production visibility: Forwarder operators can easily view harvester production rates by assortment. This allows them to see precisely how many stems of each wood type are waiting for transport in the forest and what is already staged in storage.
  • Route planning: The tools display machine routes, aiding in the planning of efficient travel paths and reducing unnecessary driving.
  • Point of Interest (POI) Marking: Harvester operators can now mark points of interest directly on the map. This is crucial for alerting forwarder operators to obstacles, areas of soft or challenging ground, or other important safety and efficiency features before they navigate the terrain.

Tuomisto highlights the practical benefits, especially in adverse conditions. “Snowfall may cover logs even between shifts, making it difficult to identify the tree species and locate stems,” he says. “Production monitoring helps forwarder operators determine the right assortments and quantities quickly, which keeps their work smooth, effective and on schedule.”

The seamless information exchange facilitates a faster, more targeted material flow from the stump to the landing, drastically cutting down on search time and improving daily scheduling adherence.

The PONSSE Manager system, which collects and visualises machine data as user-friendly reports, is available in two packages: the comprehensive, paid PONSSE Manager Pro and the free PONSSE Manager Standard package.

A key advantage for logging contractors running mixed fleets is the system’s interoperability. While a Ponsse harvester is required to generate the primary production and machine data, the Ponsse Manager Map Tools function is designed to work seamlessly with the forwarders of all manufacturers. This inclusivity means that any forwarder—including those operated by subcontractors—can be connected to the system, maximising the transparency and coordination across the entire job site.

Ponsse’s continuous development of its digital solutions, often in close cooperation with its customer network, signals a clear direction for the future of the forestry industry: one that prioritises digital integration, operational efficiency, and verifiable sustainability.

“We’re constantly developing the PONSSE Manager Pro package to help forest machine owners, operators and office workers better plan and monitor their activities, making their daily work easier and more productive,” concludes Petteri Tuomisto.

By combining detailed operational mapping with first-of-its-kind CO₂ reporting, Ponsse is not just selling machinery; it is providing the sophisticated data tools necessary for modern, responsible, and profitable logging in a climate-conscious world. The PONSSE Manager Pro is positioning itself as an essential tool for companies seeking to meet growing demands for environmental transparency while maintaining peak productivity across their fleet.
