Pölkky-October record

Pölkky Oy, a subsidiary of the Pfeifer Group, is the largest private wood processing firm in Northern Finland, and has announced an incredible performance for October 2025, setting a new all-time high for monthly sawn timber output. The company’s four sawmill units collectively produced an impressive 71,000 cubic metres (m³) of high-quality Nordic timber, signaling the successful culmination of noticeable modernisation and expansion efforts across its key production sites.

This achievement comes at a time when the broader Finnish forest industry is navigating mixed signals, with global construction demand slowly recovering but facing headwinds from economic uncertainty and supply chain pressures. Pölkky’s record month demonstrates a strong ability to optimise its high-tech production assets and capitalise on the efficiency gains from recent investments. The standout performer of the month was the Kajaani sawmill, which achieved a production volume of 23,000 m³, marking it as the largest producing unit within the Pölkky portfolio. This milestone is particularly significant as it directly reflects the successful ramp-up phase following a comprehensive, multi-million-euro investment and modernisation project.

The new Kajaani sawmill, completed after the acquisition by Pfeifer Group, was designed to be one of the most efficient and state-of-the-art facilities in the entire Nordic region. The project more than doubled the site’s annual capacity from an estimated 200,000 to a projected 450,000 m³ of sawn timber at full operational capacity. The October figures indicate that the advanced, highly automated saw line and integrated processing technology are now performing at or near their intended peak.

The consistent flow of high-quality Nordic pine and spruce from the raw timber region surrounding Kajaani, combined with cutting-edge technology, has positioned the mill to be a major contributor to the company’s overall international market presence and growth strategy.

Adding to the company’s success, the sawmill in Taivalkoski also reached a historic benchmark, exceeding the 20,000 m³ production threshold for the first time in its history. This unit, along with the sawmills in Kuusamo and the specialised further processing facility in Oulu, contributed to the robust collective performance.

The Taivalkoski mill has seen strategic investments in recent years, including the construction of a new planing mill and continuous modernisation of the saw line to enhance capacity and production flexibility. These efforts ensure the optimal utilisation of the northern Finnish raw timber, famous for its dense grain structure, which is crucial for manufacturing high-quality sawn timber products for demanding construction and industrial customers worldwide.

The overall strong performance across all four sawmills suggests that Pölkky’s strategy of combining its long-standing expertise in Northern Finnish wood processing with major, targeted injections of capital and modern production technology is paying substantial dividends.

The record output of 71,000 m³ in a single month translates to approximately 2,290 m³ of sawn timber produced every single day of the month—a staggering volume that demonstrates the significant power of the company’s combined production capacity.

In a competitive global market, such efficiency is vital. The wood processing industry relies on maximising yield and throughput to maintain profitability, especially against fluctuating timber and energy prices. This new production ceiling provides Pölkky with a solid foundation to maintain competitive pricing, ensure reliable supply for its diverse customer base across Europe and Asia, and support the broader movement toward sustainable, wood-based construction.

The company was quick to attribute this achievement to its most critical asset: its people. In a statement of gratitude, the leadership extended its deepest thanks to the entire team, recognising their consistent effort and unwavering commitment to the company’s shared growth goals. This dedication, spanning all parts of the value chain from log sorting and sawing to drying and quality assurance, is what ultimately enables the highly automated systems to run at peak efficiency.

The record month firmly establishes Pölkky, with the strategic backing of the Pfeifer Group, as a major force in the Nordic timber trade, capable of delivering large volumes of high-quality sawn timber. It signifies a promising chapter in the company’s expansion trajectory, validating the strategic decision to invest heavily in its operational footprint across Northern Finland.

As the company continues its trajectory of growth and efficiency gains, it remains focused on its long-term mission: “Together, they keep building the future—one cubic metre at a time!”
