Norra Skog makes record timber contracting to secure raw materials

Norra Timber-timber contracting

When Norra Skog, the forest owners’ association responsible for the Norra Timber industrial trademark, declared its highest-ever level of timber contracting in 2025, the Swedish forestry industry achieved a noteworthy breakthrough. The cooperative signed contracts totaling 3.9 million cubic meters under bark (m³ub) during the year, breaking the previous record of 3.6 million m³ub set in 2024.

This achievement comes at a time when many forestry and timber companies across Europe are facing increasing challenges in securing reliable access to raw material. Against this backdrop, Norra Skog’s record contracting volume stands out as a strong signal of resilience and long-term planning within Sweden’s forestry industry. The agreements provide predictability for both forest owners and downstream industrial operations, supporting continuity in a volatile market.

Timber contracting involves advance agreements between forest owners and Norra Skog that define harvesting schedules, volumes, and commercial terms well ahead of felling. For forest owners, this approach offers financial security and improved planning horizons. For the industry, it ensures a stable and traceable flow of timber, reducing exposure to short-term market fluctuations.

According to Patrik Jonsson, Head of Forest & Timber at Norra Skog, the milestone reflects the strength of the association’s integrated business model. He notes that advance contracting enables better coordination across the forestry value chain, benefiting not only forest owners but also contractors, transport providers, and industrial customers. By aligning harvesting with market demand, quality requirements, and logistics, Norra Skog is able to create efficiency and stability throughout the system.

A key factor behind the record year has been the association’s broad service offering to its members. In addition to timber sales, Norra Skog provides support in forest economics, silviculture, road construction and maintenance, clearing operations, and property brokerage. These services allow forest owners to manage their holdings strategically, from long-term planning through to harvesting and regeneration.

Despite operational challenges during the year—including a mild autumn that affected ground conditions and an increased number of appeals related to harvesting permits—Norra Skog reported stronger overall performance than in 2024. Both timber flows and demand for complementary forestry services increased, underlining continued confidence among members.

For Norra Timber’s industrial operations, the high level of contracted volume is particularly critical as the company prepares for the coming years. Henrik Jönsson, Industrial Manager at Norra Timber, highlighted that entering 2026 with such a strong raw material position significantly enhances competitiveness. Stable access to timber allows sawmills to optimise production, plan investments, and continue developing facilities with a long-term perspective.

At a time when parts of the forestry industry are constrained by raw material shortages, Norra Skog’s 2025 result demonstrates how cooperative structures, long-term contracting, and integrated services can strengthen supply security and support sustainable growth across the Swedish forestry sector.
