The Norra Skog board has invested SEK 100 million to upgrade the Hissmofors sawmill. The investment is a component of the forest owner cooperative’s larger plan to establish robust, cutting-edge, and effective industrial activities. The investment of SEK 100 million includes new post-sawing line equipment that will enable an increase in sawn timber production of 10,000 cubic meters per year. This summer marks the start of construction, with completion anticipated in the fall of 2026.
This investment is the first of two planned steps to renovate the Hissmofors sawmill, which is run by Norra Timber, the industrial part of Norra Skog. A decision on the second phase is expected in the fall of 2026; however, it is currently in the planning stage. “With the investment in Hissmofors, we’re taking another step in our strategy to operate technically advanced and efficient sawmills. At a time when other players are holding back, industrial investments like this are of great value to all our members,” notes Henrik Jönsson, Industry Manager at Norra Timber. The choice is a definite indication of sustained faith in the Hissmofors sawmill’s future. “We’re proud to have earned the trust to continue developing Hissmofors. This investment secures jobs and shows that Norra Skog believes in our region here in Jämtland,” expresses Thomas Haiduga, Sawmill Manager in Hissmofors.
Additionally, Henrik Jönsson highlights how the investment contributes to the regional balance of Norra Timbers. “We’ve previously made major investments in our sawmills in Kåge and Sävar. Now we’re building a more balanced industrial portfolio, which will enhance our market position. This is a true win-win for both our industrial operations and our forest owning members,” he continues.
A long-term initiative to improve family forestry throughout Norra Skog’s operations region in northern Sweden is also included in the investment. “With this investment, we’re showing strong confidence in the future, despite today’s uncertain global situation. Modern and efficient mills increase our competitiveness and will help ensure a sustainable and profitable forestry sector for our members for years to come,” says Patrik Jonsson, Head of Forestry & Timber at Norra Skog.
