The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is set to enhance its forest management practices with the introduction of the new Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Forest Stewardship Standard (FSS). This new certification will unlock global market access for certified sustainable forest products, provide better ecosystem services, and help address the growing challenges of illegal logging and deforestation in the region.

With over 155 million hectares of tropical forests—constituting 60% of the Congo Basin’s forest area—the DRC holds a significant portion of the world’s most biodiverse forests. These forests store around 8% of the world’s forest carbon and play a critical role in the socio-economic life of more than 40 million people. As the second-largest tropical forest region globally, the DRC’s forests have immense potential for responsible economic development while safeguarding global environmental health.

The new FSC Forest Stewardship Standard provides an essential framework for responsible forest management in the DRC. By adopting FSC certification, forest managers can ensure that their operations comply with the European Union’s Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR), which mandates that forest products must not be linked to illegal deforestation. This alignment makes it possible for DRC forest products to compete in the growing global market for sustainably sourced materials.

The standard’s development began in 2015 with a multi-stakeholder approach, engaging forest managers, companies, NGOs, civil society groups, and Indigenous communities. This inclusive process aimed to create a balanced standard, promoting long-term environmental sustainability and the protection of local communities’ rights. The standard addresses critical issues like preserving intact forest landscapes, protecting biodiversity, and supporting the socio-economic well-being of local populations.

One of the significant benefits of FSC certification is the protection of biodiversity in the Congo Basin, which is home to critically endangered species like gorillas and elephants. Studies show that FSC-certified forests in the region are more effective at conserving large mammals and supporting ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration, water purification, and recreational opportunities.

The introduction of the FSC standard in the DRC offers tremendous opportunities for collaboration between the government, private sector, and international partners to unlock the potential of the country’s forestry sector. By ensuring that the country’s forests are responsibly managed, the DRC can significantly contribute to global efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable development in one of the world’s most vital ecosystems.

The new FSC certification standard is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing sustainable forestry practices, boosting the DRC’s economy, and creating a future where both local communities and global markets benefit from the responsible management of the world’s largest tropical forest resource.
