National Timber Group has officially announced the appointment of Tony Miles as Non-Executive Director, adding decades of valuable timber industry expertise to its Board. This strategic appointment reflects NTG’s commitment to strengthening its leadership team amid a changing and competitive market landscape.
Tony’s career spans more than forty years in the timber and building materials sector. His journey began on 5 November 1979, when he started as a management trainee with a business that would later become part of Meyer International. From these early beginnings, Tony steadily climbed the ranks, gaining hands-on experience across almost every function in the timber supply chain.
His career saw him move from roles such as kiln operator, to sales, product management, and eventually into senior leadership. In 2007, he became Managing Director of International Timber, a company under the Saint-Gobain group. A decade later, he was appointed CEO of Archwood Group, a respected privately owned family business.
“I have been fortunate to work across every part of the industry, meeting fantastic people and seeing businesses of all sizes grow. Becoming Managing Director of International Timber and CEO of Archwood are among my proudest moments – but equally rewarding has been watching colleagues develop their own careers and seeing customers flourish into strong business partners,” said Tony, reflecting on his journey.
His appointment brings additional strategic depth to National Timber Group, which continues to invest in talent and leadership to navigate the evolving dynamics of the timber sector.
Tony shared that he was drawn to National Timber Group by the strength and heritage of its brands and its people.
“Brands and the people behind them are the heart and soul of any group. National Timber Group covers a wide range of sectors within the industry, which is really exciting. My role is to support Mark and the executive team, using the experiences I’ve gained to help the business prepare for future opportunities. The market may be slower than we would like right now, but history tells us it always rebounds – and those who are ready will thrive.”
With market conditions currently subdued, Tony brings a grounded and forward-thinking perspective. He recognises both the challenges and opportunities ahead, citing the importance of evolving ESG strategies and responding to shifting customer behaviours. Buying patterns from large corporates to independent merchants are changing, and businesses must adapt.
Throughout his career, Tony has remained focused on improving health and safety, strengthening brand identity, and supporting teams to make consistent progress.
“A little better every day” has long been a theme in Tony’s leadership style.
Mark Dixon, CEO of National Timber Group, expressed enthusiasm about the appointment:
“Tony’s career is an inspiring story of dedication, progression, and leadership. His insight across every level of the timber industry will bring huge value to the Group. We are thrilled to welcome him to the Board.”
National Timber Group operates across the UK, providing timber, sheet materials, and joinery products to a wide range of customers. These include regional housebuilders, joiners, commercial businesses, and large-scale infrastructure projects.
As a specialist timber supplier, the Group’s strength lies in its processing, warehousing, and distribution capabilities. This allows for short lead times, tailored service, and reliable delivery of high-quality materials backed by technical expertise.
The company continues to play a key role in supporting construction and manufacturing across the country. It leverages its geographic reach, operational infrastructure, and experienced team to meet both traditional and modern timber needs.
With Tony’s appointment, the company reinforces its strategy to maintain leadership in the sector. His broad operational experience and understanding of market cycles will be crucial in supporting the executive team’s long-term objectives.
As the timber industry navigates macroeconomic shifts, regulatory pressures, and changing customer expectations, the inclusion of a seasoned expert like Tony Miles signals a proactive approach. NTG is clearly positioning itself to remain agile, informed, and competitive in the years ahead.
