MKM Building Supplies has continued its steady expansion across the UK building materials market with the launch of a new builders’ merchant in Congleton, Cheshire. The new site, which officially opens on Monday, 19 January 2026, marks MKM’s 137th branch nationwide and underlines the company’s ongoing investment in locally run operations and regional job creation.

The Congleton opening has already generated around 18 new jobs for people in the local area, with further recruitment planned as the branch becomes fully established. MKM’s growth strategy has focused on combining national buying power with local autonomy, allowing individual branches to respond closely to the needs of their surrounding construction and home improvement markets.

The new branch is led by Branch Director Ric Bauer, a well-known figure within the builders’ merchant sector who brings more than 30 years of industry experience to the role. Bauer began his career working in a builders’ yard before progressing through trade counter positions and senior management roles. Before taking on the Congleton position, he served as Head of Building Materials at MKM.

Having lived in nearby Wilmslow for over 15 years, Bauer says his understanding of the local area was a key factor in choosing Congleton as the next location for MKM’s expansion. He believes the town’s strong sense of community aligns closely with MKM’s operating model, which places decision-making power at the branch level rather than centralising it at the head office.

According to Bauer, the aim is for the Congleton branch to become a genuine part of the local economy, supporting both professional trades and household customers rather than operating as a distant, corporate-style outlet.

Designed as a comprehensive building materials hub, the Congleton branch will offer a wide range of products for both trade professionals and retail customers. Core building materials will be supported by specialist departments covering landscaping, plumbing and heating, kitchens and bathrooms, and wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves.

Timber will be a major focus at the site, with a broad selection of treated C16 and C24 structural timber available to meet the needs of builders, joiners, and contractors. An 18,000 sq ft covered warehouse and dedicated timber storage facility form a central part of the branch, helping to protect materials from the elements and ensure consistent quality throughout the year.

In addition to established national brands, the branch will also stock selected products from local suppliers, reinforcing MKM’s commitment to supporting regional businesses wherever possible.

One of the defining features of MKM’s branch model is its emphasis on local decision-making. Bauer explained that this approach allows the Congleton team to shape their product range around real customer demand rather than following a standardised national template.

By working closely with local trades from the outset, the branch aims to adapt quickly to the specific materials, brands, and specifications most commonly used in the area. This flexibility is expected to be a key differentiator in a competitive building materials market.

Once fully staffed, the Congleton team is projected to bring more than 200 years of combined industry experience. MKM has highlighted training, product knowledge, and personal service as central pillars of its customer offering, supported by dedicated account contacts, flexible credit facilities, and free local delivery.

Beyond supplying building materials, the Congleton branch plans to play an active role in the local community. MKM has confirmed its intention to support local charities, community organisations, and sports teams, reinforcing its position as a long-term local partner rather than simply a supplier.

As MKM continues to expand its footprint across the UK, the Congleton opening reflects wider trends within the building materials industry, where service, local knowledge, and strong community ties are increasingly seen as essential to long-term success.
