Mirka acquires Hermes Bonded Abrasives to strengthen precision grinding portfolio

Mirka Ltd, a world-leading manufacturer of surface finishing and industrial solutions, has announced the acquisition of the bonded conventional abrasive wheels business from Hermes Schleifmittel GmbH. The deal, signed on September 1 2025 in Hamburg, includes the bonded abrasives factory in Uetersen, along with all related assets, inventory, and staff involved in the bonded business. This acquisition represents a key step in Mirka’s strategic expansion within the precision grinding sector.

Expanding Precision Grinding Capabilities

Since 2013, Mirka has been focused on expanding its product portfolio in precision grinding. This began with the development of a dedicated production line for micro grit flexible abrasives, designed for polishing and lapping applications. In 2017, the company broadened its portfolio with the acquisition of Cafro, a leading superabrasive wheel manufacturer in Italy. In 2021, URMA Rolls, a manufacturer of dressing rolls, was added to further strengthen Mirka’s offering. Now, with the addition of Hermes bonded conventional abrasive wheels, which complement Mirka’s existing diamond and CBN wheels, the company has completed its core product portfolio in the precision grinding market.

Mirka’s Chief Executive Officer, Stefan Sjöberg, expressed excitement over the acquisition, stating: “Finally, after years of building up the portfolio, we now have a broad, comprehensive and very competitive offering in precision grinding that can serve the most demanding grinding applications.” He further added, “We are really excited about this opportunity and the synergies it brings to our offering.”

Applications and Industry Impact

Conventional bonded abrasives are widely used across various industrial applications, particularly for precision grinding in the metal parts sector. These abrasives play a crucial role in the manufacturing and servicing of gearboxes, bearings, turbine parts, and other components critical to the energy and aerospace sectors. The acquisition of Hermes’ bonded abrasive product line will enable Mirka to better serve these high-demand industries, offering solutions that meet the most rigorous grinding requirements.

The integration of the Uetersen factory into Mirka’s operations will position it as the company’s competence centre for bonded conventional abrasives. This will allow Mirka to streamline its operations and enhance its capabilities in this area. The integration process is expected to begin immediately, with the review and actioning of the development and investment needs to follow.

Smooth Integration and Continuity of Operations

As part of the integration process, Uetersen will remain a key location for the production of bonded conventional abrasives. Mirka is committed to ensuring the continuity of operations and deliveries, emphasising that bonded abrasives products are vital to their customers’ operations. “Operations and deliveries in Uetersen will continue uninterrupted. Bonded abrasives products are critical to our customers’ operations, and we can now secure the supply to our key customers and see how we can serve them even better,” said Stefan Sjöberg.

This smooth integration will allow Mirka to maintain customer relationships while expanding its ability to serve new markets with advanced, high-performance abrasives. The company’s continued focus on innovation and quality is set to drive growth within the precision grinding market, offering customers solutions that enhance productivity and performance.

Mirka’s Commitment to Growth and Innovation

Mirka’s commitment to growth through strategic acquisitions and innovation continues to solidify its position as a leader in the abrasives industry. With this latest acquisition, the company is well-positioned to meet the evolving needs of customers in industries such as aerospace, energy, and manufacturing, where precision grinding is critical.

By expanding its portfolio to include bonded conventional abrasives, Mirka is now equipped to offer a complete range of solutions for precision grinding. This development will allow the company to cater to an even broader customer base while maintaining its focus on delivering superior products and services.

Looking Ahead: Future Opportunities for Precision Grinding

The acquisition of Hermes bonded abrasives marks an exciting new chapter in Mirka’s growth trajectory. As a company known for its innovative approach to surface finishing and grinding solutions, Mirka is poised to continue shaping the future of the precision grinding industry. The company’s expanded product range, combined with its longstanding expertise, ensures that it will remain a key player in the market for years to come.

Strategic Expansion to Meet Customer Demands

Mirka’s acquisition of Hermes’ bonded abrasives aligns with the company’s strategic goal to expand its presence in the precision grinding sector and provide its customers with cutting-edge solutions. By integrating Hermes’ operations into its portfolio, Mirka is taking a significant step forward in meeting the demands of industries that rely on high-precision grinding, ultimately helping to improve the efficiency and performance of products used in the energy and aerospace sectors.
