The Metsä Board declared in March 2025 that it would close the Tako mill after change negotiations, in an attempt to increase the company’s profitability and cost competitiveness. As a result, on June 17, the Tako board mill shut down its board machine BM1, ending output.
Through a thorough support program, the Metsä Board has assisted in the reemployment of the mill’s 191 workers since the ruling. This has involved working with employment authorities, holding internal recruitment days in conjunction with other Metsä Group mills, and providing mentoring and training for reemployment. Ninety-five workers had already secured other employment at the time of the production shutdown. “The decision to close the mill has been a difficult one, and we have aimed to support our personnel in the best possible way during this transition. For example, internal recruitment days have helped Tako employees find new roles within Metsä Group. We still hope that more job opportunities will be found, depending on individuals’ ability to relocate,” says Timo Ahonen, VP of Tako Board mill.
Deliveries to customers will remain uninterrupted as Tako’s goods are now produced at Metsä Board’s Kyro mill. “The mill’s production has been run down responsibly and with high quality. This accomplishment is thanks to the personnel, who have demonstrated exceptional professionalism despite the difficult situation. Tako is known for its strong ‘Tako spirit’, which has been evident in the work commitment, right up to the final days of production,” Ahonen adds.
Cleaning and the disassembly of the mill’s production machinery have started after production is finished. It is anticipated that production equipment and machinery will be dismantled in 2026. By the end of 2025, tanks, pipes, machinery, and equipment will all be cleaned and discharged. In order to disassemble the external equipment from outside the building, the process of acquiring a building permit has begun. The property’s future usage is still up in the air.
