In a powerful demonstration of the Finnish forest machinery sector’s enduring strength and robust partnerships, Metsä-Multia, a prominent logging and forest service company based in Multia, Central Finland, recently marked an extraordinary operational milestone. On Friday, October 24, 2025, the company’s owners, brothers Aki and Kai Laaja, officially took delivery of their 200th Ponsse forest machine, a spectacular achievement that underscores nearly four decades of close collaboration between the two industry heavyweights.
This landmark occasion did not merely celebrate a number; it spotlighted a partnership forged in 1987 when Metsä-Multia acquired its very first Ponsse. The successful continuation of this relationship for 38 years speaks volumes about the quality, reliability, and service commitment that underpins the operations of both organisations, solidifying their positions in the competitive Nordic forestry landscape.
The ‘Zazu’ forwarder and fleet expansion
The 200th anniversary machine, a high-performing Ponsse Wisent forwarder, arrived from the Ponsse factory in Vieremä bearing special commemorative stickers. These decals were a visible honour celebrating the prolonged and fruitful cooperation between the manufacturer and its long-standing customer. Following a company tradition, the forwarder has been affectionately named “Zazu” and will immediately join Metsä-Multia’s active fleet, hauling timber from various logging sites.
The Wisent, a specialist in thinning and intermediate harvesting, is an exemplary choice for an anniversary machine. Known for its agility, excellent load-carrying capacity, and low ground pressure, the Wisent is perfectly suited for minimising environmental impact in sensitive forest areas—a critical consideration for sustainable Finnish forestry. According to specifications for this class of machine, the Wisent typically features a powerful engine and Ponsse’s K70+ M loader with up to a 10-meter reach, balancing efficiency with terrain gentleness.
Furthermore, this delivery was part of a dual acquisition. Metsä-Multia also added a brand-new Ponsse Bear harvester to their arsenal, marking the 199th Ponsse machine in their history and christened “Bulle.” The Bear represents Ponsse’s largest and most powerful harvester, designed for demanding regeneration felling and heavy-duty tasks. The Bear boasts a formidable 6-cylinder engine, dual-circuit hydraulics, and a powerful C6 sliding boom crane, making it a pivotal asset for maximising timber yield and operational efficiency in large-scale logging operations. The simultaneous investment in both forwarder and harvester technology reflects Metsä-Multia’s commitment to running an advanced, cut-to-length (CTL) system, a predominant method in Finnish and Scandinavian logging.
The longevity of the partnership is rooted in a shared commitment to operational excellence and customer-centric values. Aki Laaja, Metsä-Multia’s CEO, highlighted the critical factors driving their loyalty to the brand. “For us, it’s paramount that our forest machines are high-quality and completely trustworthy,” he stated. He further emphasised the non-negotiable importance of the manufacturer’s support infrastructure. “Ponsse’s excellent service network throughout Finland and their spare parts availability are hugely significant. Our machines must receive timely maintenance, and components must be available precisely when required to ensure minimal downtime.”
This sentiment was echoed by Kai Laaja, Metsä-Multia’s Director, who added, “We are genuinely pleased with our long-term collaboration with Ponsse. This partnership offers a true feeling that we are actively working together in a positive spirit toward common goals.”
For Ponsse, the milestone offers a meaningful moment to reflect on its foundational business philosophy. Jani Liukkonen, Ponsse’s Country Manager for Finland, noted that Metsä-Multia’s 200th machine achievement serves as a magnificent way to commemorate Ponsse’s own 55th anniversary year. “Our cooperation has been exceptionally good from the very beginning, and we extend our deepest gratitude for this remarkable shared journey,” Liukkonen said. He stressed that a core tenet of the company since its founding has been actively listening to customer feedback, a practice that continues to guide their relationship with Metsä-Multia.
This significant investment by Metsä-Multia occurs within a dynamic and resilient Finnish forestry machinery market. Recent data indicate that the sector is experiencing stable, positive growth. The Finnish market for forestry machinery, which includes Harvesters and Forwarders like the Bear and Wisent, is forecast to show a steady increase, driven largely by the ongoing trend towards automated and specialized equipment, greater emphasis on sustainable harvesting practices, and the continuous need to replace aging fleets.
The preference for advanced, reliable machines that offer superior uptime—as emphasised by Aki Laaja—is a prevailing market driver. Furthermore, the global forestry equipment market is seeing a push towards low-emission and high-efficiency models, aligning with the specifications and performance characteristics of Ponsse’s modern equipment fleet. The success of local companies like Metsä-Multia, facilitated by strong manufacturer support, ensures that Finland remains a global leader in mechanized and sustainable logging.
The celebration of the 200th machine is more than a simple transaction; it is a powerful symbol of a deeply integrated value chain, where a manufacturer’s technological leadership and a logging contractor’s operational demands converge to drive the engine of Finland’s vital forest industry. The ‘Zazu’ and ‘Bulle’ additions are set to continue this productive legacy across the Central Finland forests for years to come.
