Metsä Wood, a subsidiary of Metsä Group, has announced plans to halt plywood production at its Suolahti mill in Finland due to insufficient profitability.

According to the outlined plan, production at the Suolahti birch plywood mill is expected to end by the close of the first quarter in 2025, while the spruce plywood mill will cease operations by the end of 2026 at the latest. The statutory negotiations at the Suolahti facility will involve all 370 employees affected by the closure.

“The closing of the mill is planned to be carried out in stages to better enable the employment of personnel within Metsä Group. The personnel of the new Kerto LVL mill in Äänekoski would be recruited from the Suolahti mill, and permanent personnel would be offered the opportunity to work in other Metsä Group units”, says Jaakko Anttila, Executive Vice President at Metsä Wood.

The Suolahti plywood mill has an annual production capacity of 35 000 m3 of birch plywood and 160 000 m3 of spruce plywood.
