Metsä Fibre introduces highly advanced sawmill

Metsä Fibre introduces the most advanced, state-of-the-art sawmill in Rauma, Finland. With its Rauma sawmill, Metsä Fibre is leaping ahead of the rest of the industry in technology, efficiency and operating models. Technological innovations such as machine vision, artificial intelligence and integrated information systems to control sawline functions will result in sawn timber of even more consistent quality. The high degree of automation will also improve cost efficiency.

One of the producers of pulp, sawn timber, bioproducts and bioenergy, Metsa Fibre now will enhance production of produce sawn timber, has introduced futuristic saw processes on a very big scale.

Sawn wood is expected to be of even higher consistency thanks to technological advancements like machine vision, artificial intelligence, and integrated information systems that regulate sawline functions. The high level of automation will increase cost effectiveness as well.

According to Ismo Nousiainen, CEO of Metsa FibreMetsä, everything was completed in conjunction with the equipment suppliers, making this sawmill a forerunner in its field in terms of efficiency and technology. Production process will start during the third quarter of 2022, with an investment of over 200 million euros.

“The technology used at the sawmill was designed to suit the product range. For example, DX sawing, or pre-cutting, is a first for the industry. It has yet to be used anywhere else,” says Harri Haapaniemi, Project Director at Metsä Fibre.

DX sawing features four arbours instead of the traditional two. It means shallower cutting depths and sawing speeds that are twice as fast, even for thicker logs.
