Metro-Ply Group expands production with sixth MDF line from Siempelkamp

Metro-Ply Group, Southeast Asia’s leading producer of wood-based panels, has strengthened its longstanding partnership with the Siempelkamp Group by placing an order for a new MDF line, its sixth, to be installed at its Surat Thani facility in southern Thailand. The new MDF Line, incorporating Siempelkamp’s advanced ContiRoll® Generation 9i press, is expected to produce up to 450,000 cubic metres annually and marks the fifth collaborative project between the two companies.

The agreement, signed in August, includes not only the new MDF production line but also equipment for a significant 25% capacity expansion of the existing particleboard lines at Metro-Ply’s Nonthaburi facility. The expansion at Nonthaburi will add an impressive 220,000 cubic metres of production capacity. The new line at Surat Thani, strategically located near Thailand’s largest rubberwood plantations, will rely exclusively on these local raw materials, furthering sustainable production practices.

As part of the contract, Siempelkamp’s subsidiary BÜTTNER will supply essential energy infrastructure, including a fibre dryer, ESP filter, and an energy plant, to support the new MDF line. Pallmann, another Siempelkamp subsidiary known for its expertise in size reduction, will contribute chipping lines, knife ring flakers, and a drum dryer to boost the productivity of the particleboard lines at Nonthaburi.

This latest order builds on Metro-Ply’s successful 2019 collaboration with Siempelkamp, which led to the installation of an MDF line in Kanchanaburi, operational since April 2021. With the Surat Thani MDF Line set to begin assembly in late 2025, Metro-Ply continues its expansion, bringing its total production sites to six, with operations across Thailand in Nonthaburi, Prachinburi, Kanchanaburi, Rayong, Surat Thani, and an additional location in Wangaratta, Australia.

Siempelkamp expressed pride in its enduring relationship with Metro-Ply Group, a collaboration spanning over 25 years, which has been pivotal in Metro-Ply’s ascent as a key player in the Asia-Pacific panel board industry.
