In recognition of its exemplary commitment to sustainability and leadership in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices, Merino Group has been honored with the Prithvi Award 2024. The award was presented at the prestigious ESG Conference held in New Delhi, solidifying Merino’s position as a global leader in responsible business operations.
The award was received by Shri Madhusudan Lohia, Director of Merino Industries Ltd., and Shri Rakesh Tirath, Advisor of Corporate Affairs at Merino Industries Ltd. The Prithvi Award celebrates “Sustainability Icons” who are at the forefront of advancing eco-friendly and inclusive business models, making Merino a standout in the industry.
Merino’s recognition is the result of its innovative sustainability practices under its flagship Nirmal Initiative. This initiative reflects the company’s holistic approach to reducing its environmental impact by promoting renewable energy, water conservation, and carbon sequestration. The Nirmal program is rooted in the five elements of nature—energy (Analah), air (Vayu), soil (Bhūmih), water (Aapah), and waste (Khah)—all of which drive Merino’s sustainability agenda globally.
A significant achievement that contributed to Merino’s win is its impressive progress in renewable energy. In the fiscal year 2023-2024, 74.6% of Merino’s total energy needs, including heat and electricity, were met through renewable and non-fossil fuel sources. This achievement aligns with India’s renewable energy goals and reduces the company’s dependence on fossil fuels. Merino utilized biomass, biogas, and solar energy, which are non-fossil fuel sources, significantly cutting its carbon footprint.
Merino also produced approximately 95 metric tons of vermicompost, benefiting farming communities engaged in contract farming. This initiative reflects Merino’s commitment to sustainability through circular economy principles, ensuring that resources are reused effectively, and waste is minimized.
The company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives also played a crucial role in its recognition. Through programs such as the Shri Hara Kasturi Memorial Trust, Merino has made substantial contributions to education and healthcare. A free day-boarding school provides education, meals, and essential supplies to more than 150 children from underprivileged families, while the Yogakshema Scholarship Program supports bright but economically disadvantaged students.
In the healthcare sector, Merino has successfully treated over 6,500 tuberculosis patients and organized 14 health camps in rural villages during 2023-2024, benefitting thousands of people.
Upon receiving the award, Shri Madhusudan Lohia remarked, “At Merino, sustainability is not just a goal; it is a core value that shapes everything we do. The Prithvi Award strengthens our resolve to continue driving innovations that protect our environment while fostering growth and progress.”
This award reinforces Merino’s leadership in sustainable business practices and highlights its ongoing efforts to tackle global challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, and responsible governance.
