Lunawood has joined hands with Nordic Timber Labs in a strategic partnership agreement. This move comes as a measure to protect its planned Lunawood Thermowood products against fire at their production site in Nastola, Lahti. Nordic Timber Labs is a specialised supplier of fire impregnation services that runs in a cutting-edge facility with cutting-edge equipment. Beginning in 2023, fire protection will be offered with the environmentally friendly Lunawood Thermowood products. This broadens the applications for Lunawood in environmentally friendly design even more.

New heights in larger projects with the fire protection technology

In development centres, particularly, where architects seek to utilise a natural wood product to add warmth and soften modern architecture and help replace fossil building materials with wood products that work as carbon storage, the usage of wood materials for facades has expanded globally. Thermowood belongs to the same fire class D as untreated wood without any fire protective treatment. Lunawood Thermowood satisfies the mandatory fire class B of the facade constructions of P1 and P2 buildings using the fire impregnation technique.

A documented, CE-marked treatment process is the technology and procedure for fire protection, enabling a standardised level of fire protection. Thermowood, a sustainable alternative to fossil-based materials, may reach new heights in larger projects because of the fire impregnation technology, which is the cornerstone of the Lunawood strategy. In addition, says VP of Marketing and Product Management Maija Masalin, working with a local impregnation partner helps them lower the overall climate imprint of the final product.

“We are proud to be teaming up with such a competent and well-respected innovator in the Thermowood space, and it’s exciting bringing novel technology to the Finnish timber market. The global commercial footprint of Lunawood products helps us enable fire safe wood construction all around the world” says NTL CEO Vincent Parasnis.

“We are happy that such specialised expertise has been established in Finland. This co-operation increases the degree of domesticity and both usability and competitiveness of sustainable wood products manufactured entirely in Finland in the international market. We are proud to work with professional people, and that the production facility has been established so close to our headquarters, which enables us to subcontract within our quality control circle,” cheers Masalin.
