interzum 2019 : Witness trends of tomorrow

 Thursday, April 25, 2019

In just a month “the future” will begin again in Cologne where the wood manufacturing and supplier industry may look forward to meet more than 70,000 visitors and 1,700 exhibitors from across the globe.

On 21 May 2019, the future of furniture production and interior construction is scheduled to begin in Cologne. interzum is the leading fair that inspires the global furniture supplier industry. The fair-ground welcomes the decision makers, opinion leaders, disseminators and trendsetters from all over the world and keep up with the innovations in the domain, reach out and grow new contacts.

The facts alone speak in favour of this leading international fair, with more than 1,700 exhibitors coming face-to-face with an anticipated 70,000 visitors from over 150 countries. Most of the exhibitors at the fair are from abroad and hence making interzum the most international industry event in the world. Exhibitors present their innovations across 190,000 square metres of exhibition space.

interzum is an opportunity for the supplier industry to reveal all its innovative power. This year there will be three distinct theme into under specific topics, the event is optimally organised to make trade fair attendance a success, because its structure brings the stakeholders in the value chain into close contact – and gives exhibitors and visitors alike a good overview. The largest exhibition area at interzum 2019 will be occupied by the “Function & Components” product segment. In Halls 3.2, 4, 5, 7 and 8, the industry will show how customers’ increasing demands in the areas of technology, energy efficiency, comfort and convenience can be fulfilled. These points will be addressed by the product segments of light and lighting systems, semi-finished products for storage, kitchen, office and frame furniture, fittings, locks and furniture components. Even more convenient, individual, digital and connected – these are the expectations for the interiors of the future, and this is the reason why solutions to these requirements will be the focus of attention in the technical and functional components segment.

The conservation of resources, sustainable raw materials and cradle-to-cradle concepts – these are but a few of the trends addressed in the Materials & Nature segment in Halls 4.2, 6 and 10.2. This is where a comprehensive presentation of versatile materials for furniture design will again be offered, including wood, veneer, parquet, interior design and furnishings, decorative surface design, decor papers, laminates, wood-based materials, high-pressure laminates, solid surface materials, edge trims, surface treatments and finishes, embossing cylinders and sheet metal.

In the Textile & Machinery segment in Halls 9, 10.1 and 11, the quality leaders and innovation drivers from across the entire value chain will again be presenting their latest developments. These include machinery for upholstery and mattress manufacture, upholstery materials, upholstery accessories, materials for covers, leather and adhesives. In a new development for 2019, Hall 10.1 will serve as a central connecting hub for the Textile & Machinery segment, reinventing itself in terms of structure. The entire segment is thereby setting standards for a successful future. With this new clustering, the Textile & Machinery themed area is growing even more closely together. The three segments mean that visitors can also look forward to an optimal structure throughout the trade fair, designed to give a quick and compact overview of the trends and new developments in the sector. “Today, success is the result of innovative ideas. With the new concept, we’re boosting the trade fair’s function to offer orientation and transparency,” says Matthias Pollmann, Koelnmesse’s Vice President Trade Fair Management.

With the newly established “Tiny Spaces – Living in Compact Homes“ piazza, interzum is addressing a highly topical issue. After all, living space is becoming increasingly scarce in the world’s congested urban areas, with rents continuously rising. How comfort can be combined with small living spaces is and will remain a highly relevant issue – and not only for the interiors industry. interzum has attracted a range of high-profile companies to appear in the piazza: Atim, Blum, Hettich, Hommel, Häfele and Pessotto will present their responses to the specific requirements of living in tiny spaces. As suppliers to the furniture industry, they will provide important new inspiration for developments in interior design.

The “Disruptive Materials – Changing the Future” piazza at the upcoming interzum (21 to 24 May 2019) will be devoted to these materials and production methods. The Berlin trend forecasting agency HAUTE INNOVATION will showcase some of the latest materials innovations and disruptive technologies at the trade fair. The exhibition will be divided into four main areas of focus: biological transformation, resource efficiency and sustainability, digital and smart materials, and production-related materials innovations. Featuring over 100 exhibits across roughly 400 square metres, the “Disruptive Materials” piazza will be among the major attractions at interzum.

The “Trends in Surfaces & Wood Design” piazza in Hall 6.1 will present product solutions for interior architecture and the furniture design of tomorrow. The piazza will be highlighting how innovative surface materials broaden the range of options available to the industry. Pioneering developments in interior architecture and furniture design will be concentrated into one area here. The “Surfaces & Wood Design” piazza is curated by the interior designer and trend expert Katrin de Louw. With her Trendfilter® agency, she has already been responsible for a special exhibition on the topic of surfaces at the last edition of interzum. The piazza is divided into sections addressing the key words “Sustainability”, “Customised”, “Haptic”, “Lightweight”, “Digital Printing”, “Anti-Fingerprint” and “Wood & Stones”. It is not just wood and materials that will be presented in the special exhibition, but also related product groups such as furniture handles or upholstery and decorative fabrics.

Visitors will have the opportunity to experience innovative solutions for life in mobile living environments. All the trends in the mobile sector are highly relevant to interzum because new materials and innovations in function, machinery and lightweight design are required to put them into practice. Indeed, the requirements for mobile spaces are often even more demanding than in a typical residential context. The special event area in Hall 10.1 will host impressive exhibits and highlight examples from the Maritime, Aircraft, Railway and Automotive areas.

A special area in Hall 3.2 has been dedicated to the subject of digital printing as a complement to the piazza. The broad spectrum of potential uses of digital printing will be shown in a demonstration ranging from the design concept to the finished piece of furniture and thus including all the important process steps required for the integration of this groundbreaking technology into furniture production and interior design. The entire process will therefore be shown, from the choice of decoration and its transfer into the computer programs to the actual printing stage and the subsequent finishing step. There will also be a presentation of a selection of leading specialists in the field. In this way, visitors will discover how digital printing technology can be integrated into their processes, what process steps have to be taken into consideration and what expertise is available.
