The IMA Schelling Group is a specialist in systems and solutions for edge processing. “For decades, we have been paying special attention to narrow surfaces,” emphasizes Dennis Reddig, Product Manager Edge Processing at IMA Schelling. In order for these supposedly most inconspicuous areas on furniture parts to have the same outstanding quality as the surfaces, several processing steps are necessary. IMA Schelling has the right machines and solutions for this in its portfolio.

Laser edging or gluing

Once the raw panels have been formatted, the edging machine then takes over the application of the edging material. Depending on the requirements and application, producers can choose between laser edging and gluing. Laser edging creates a bond with the panel coating of the very highest quality. “We’re talking about zero-joint edge banding here,” Reddig explains. Another alternative is classic edge joining using adhesive. “We also offer machines that switch between both edging methods,” says Reddig.

Finishing units reworked

During the final edge finishing, possible protrusions or impurities are removed. In addition, special profiles are machined, such as a J-profile on furniture doors, which later replaces the door handle. IMA Schelling has just further optimized its finishing units in terms of handling and energy efficiency.

Automated also for batch size 1

IMA Schelling has developed a comprehensive portfolio of system components and solutions to automate these steps even for batch size 1. “Our experts help customers to develop automated processes for their very specific requirements,” emphasizes Dennis Reddig. So that edge processing not only meets the qualitative requirements, but also the economic ones.
