Architecture and design studio Schmidt Hammer Lassen (SHL) has revealed the design for what is reportedly the world’s “tallest timber residential building”, standing at 100m tall, eclipsing the current mass timber-framed building at approximately 85m tall.

Based in Winterthur, Switzerland, the mass timber building Rocket&Tigerli is designed to create a framework for an active and attractive neighbourhood, deeply rooted in the area’s historical context.

The building will be comprised of four volumes of different heights that mixes regular housing, student housing, a restaurant, retail spaces, sky-bar, spa, and hotel.

According to SHL, the concrete core has been replaced with wood, resulting in the individual beam coming in at a lower weight. This makes it possible to build taller constructions while, at the same time, ensuring that the entire building process achieves a lower amount of embedded carbon.

Rocket&Tigerli was developed in partnership with construction company Implenia and Swiss university ETH Zurich, and was designed by SHL and local Swiss architecture studio Cometti Truffer Hodel.

The project marks a milestone in the construction of timber buildings – not solely because of its 100m, but also because it introduces a construction system that examines wood as a “natural replacement” for concrete.

The building is expected to be completed and ready for residents to move in to by 2026.
