HUBTEX-Award 2025

The UK Material Handling Association (UKMHA) has officially recognised HUBTEX as a leader in industrial innovation, presenting the manufacturer with the prestigious Archie Award for Operational Efficiency. The accolade was awarded in recognition of the transformative impact of the HUBTEX PhoeniX electric multidirectional sideloader, particularly its performance within the plastics and polymer manufacturing sector.

For over three decades, the “Archies” have served as the gold standard for excellence in the material handling industry. By honoring companies that push the boundaries of safety, ergonomics, and productivity, the UKMHA highlights solutions that solve the modern warehouse’s most pressing challenges. This year, the PhoeniX series stood out for its ability to blend high-tech automation with sustainable power, delivering a measurable competitive edge.

The core challenge for many manufacturers—especially those handling plastics and long-form polymers—is the management of bulky, 6-meter-long profile racks. Traditional forklifts often struggle with the spatial constraints of modern facilities, but the PhoeniX was designed specifically to thrive in these “bottleneck” environments.

Operating in aisles as narrow as 2.02 meters, the PhoeniX utilises its multidirectional capabilities to navigate with surgical precision. The implementation of this technology allowed the award-winning application to:

The “Operational Efficiency” award was largely driven by two proprietary HUBTEX features: the sensor-based Aisle Entry Assist and the HUBTEX Load Manager.

1. Rapid aisle entry

In high-volume environments, seconds matter. The Aisle Entry Assist enables semi-automated, rapid entry into narrow racking aisles. By removing the need for tedious manual maneuvering and alignment, the system saves approximately ten seconds per movement. Over the course of a shift, these recovered seconds aggregate into a massive boost in throughput, allowing the existing workforce to accomplish more with less physical strain.

2. Precision loading

The integrated Load Manager addresses the risks associated with manual storage and retrieval. With pre-programmed heights and designated storage locations, the PhoeniX travels to the exact rack level at the touch of a button. This eliminates the “trial and error” phase of fine adjustment, which is the primary cause of damage to racking systems and delicate goods.

Perhaps the most striking statistic cited by the UKMHA was the PhoeniX’s impact on human resources. The material handling industry is currently grappling with a global labor shortage and high turnover rates. Traditionally, training a specialised sideloader operator takes approximately three months to reach full proficiency.

Because of the PhoeniX’s intuitive controls and semi-automated assistance systems, the customer reported that onboarding time dropped from three months to just two weeks. This 85% reduction ensures:

The Archie Award also considered the environmental footprint of the machinery. The shift from traditional combustion or older electric models to the PhoeniX resulted in a 20% reduction in total energy consumption.

This efficiency is powered by a combination of modern lithium-ion (Li-Ion) technology and a transition to electric power steering. Unlike lead-acid batteries that require lengthy charging cycles and dedicated “battery rooms,” the PhoeniX’s Li-Ion system supports intelligent intermediate charging.

Efficiency Insight: The PhoeniX can charge from 30% to 80% in just 30 minutes.

This capability has a twofold benefit. First, it eliminates the need for time-consuming battery swaps mid-shift. Second, it allows companies to reclaim the valuable floor space previously reserved for spare battery storage, converting “dead space” into productive manufacturing or storage areas.

“This award is a special endorsement for us,” stated Michael Röbig, Head of Product Management at HUBTEX. “With this application example, we demonstrate that our vehicles not only make processes faster, safer, and more sustainable, but also deliver a measurable and flexible competitive edge.”

The success of the PhoeniX series at the UKMHA Archies signals a shift in the material handling landscape. Efficiency is no longer just about speed; it is about the intelligent integration of ergonomics, rapid training, and sustainable power. For UK manufacturers looking to optimize their footprint, the multidirectional sideloader is no longer a niche tool—it is a central pillar of operational excellence.
