How to solve the most frequent causes of failures in edgebanding?

The quality and durability of furniture parts depends on a flawless edgebanding. However, several common issues can significantly impact on the quality of furniture components due to edgebanding failures. Among the most frequent sources of failure are an incorrect adhesive temperature, insufficient adhesive application amounts and inadequate edgeband pressing.

A frequent problem in edgebanding are insufficient adhesive application amounts. This can substantially reduce the bonding strength between the edgeband and the substrate. Small empty spaces or voids in the bondline, whereas less than 95% of the substrate edge is covered with adhesive, are typically a sign that the application amount was too low.

Signs and causes of too high application temperature

Processing temperatures that are too high are at the root of many failure patterns and can lead to significant problems. Typical signs that the adhesive was heated too much are: increased stringing, misaligned edgebands and a discernible yellow-brownish discoloring of the adhesive. Excessive temperature also makes it easier to press out the adhesive from the joint, leading to soiled parts. Prolonged idle times of the machine pose a particular risk because the adhesive can overheat in the melting pot.

Solution if the adhesive temperature is too high

To prevent the adhesive from overheating, measure the temperature directly at the applicator roller using an infrared thermometer. Make sure that the machine settings are within the recommended temperature range. During production breaks and maintenance work, reduce the temperature in the melting pot to avoid a negative impact on quality. Regularly verify and adjust the machine settings to maintain a consistent quality of the results.

Inadequate Pressing

Signs and causes of inadequate pressing

If the edgeband is not pressed properly, e.g. because the pressure is too low or not applied evenly, the edgeband cannot be bonded securely to the substrate. Gaps in the bondline and an easily removable edgeband are often signs of inadequate pressing. The pattern of the application roller may also be visible on the adhesive surface, indicating low pressure or an uneven distribution of the pressure.

Solution for inadequate pressing

Check the setting of the pressure rollers and make sure that the pressure is applied uniformly across the entire surface. If necessary, increase the pressure to ensure an optimum bonding between the substrate and the edgeband. Regular tests and adjustments are key to maintaining a high product quality. Follow the recommendations of the equipment manufacturer or contact them directly.
