Hood Industries, a leading player in the wood processing industry, has entered into a strategic partnership with Comact, a global leader in high-performance OEM wood processing solutions. This collaboration marks the beginning of a significant upgrade to the company’s existing facility in Waynesboro, Mississippi. The project, which involves a comprehensive brownfield modernisation, aims to enhance operational efficiency, boost production capacity, and further Hood Industries’ commitment to innovation.
A Proven Partnership
Jay Galloway, President of Hood Industries, expressed his enthusiasm for the continued collaboration with Comact, highlighting the success of their previous project in Bogalusa, Louisiana. “We have partnered with Comact on a successful modernization project at our facility in Bogalusa, LA,” said Galloway. “As we began to explore our options for upgrading the Waynesboro facility, it became obvious to continue the partnership. Their technical expertise, collaborative approach, and proven ability to deliver cutting-edge and reliable solutions made them a natural fit as we continue to invest in the future of our operations.”
The Waynesboro facility will be upgraded with state-of-the-art technology aimed at improving the entire production process. The enhancements are expected to provide increased efficiency, higher fiber recovery, and reduced energy consumption, further reinforcing Hood Industries’ reputation as an innovator in the wood processing sector.
Key Upgrades to the Waynesboro Facility
The modernisation will introduce a fully integrated sawmill, incorporating a high-performance hybrid sawline designed to maximise fiber recovery and operational efficiency. This sawline will significantly improve throughput while reducing waste. The project also includes the installation of two new Continuous Dual Path Kilns (CDPK) and a new gas burner for the existing kiln. The CDPKs will greatly enhance the facility’s drying capacity, improving energy efficiency and reducing operational costs.
One of the most notable features of the upgrade is the incorporation of AI-powered Smart Vision tools. These advanced systems will continuously monitor operations, gathering data to optimise throughput and ensure peak performance at all times. Additionally, the planer mill will be upgraded with a Miller Planer and Comact’s GradExpert system, further enhancing the overall performance of the plant.
A Phased Approach to Minimise Disruption
The modernisation project will be carried out in multiple phases to ensure that existing systems remain operational during construction. This phased approach has been carefully designed to minimise production losses, allowing Hood Industries to continue fulfilling its commitments to customers without significant disruption. Throughout the project, Comact’s team will work closely with Hood Industries to ensure a smooth and seamless transition to the new and improved facility.
“We’re proud to continue our collaboration with Hood Industries through this important modernization project,” said Simon Potvin, CEO of Comact. “Building on the strong relationship and trust we’ve developed over previous projects, our team is fully committed to delivering an integrated solution that enhances reliability, performance, and long-term value of their Waynesboro facility. We have set clear goals to deliver this project on-time and on-budget, ensuring Hood Industries can count on Comact for excellence and accountability at every stage.”
Ensuring Reliability and Long-Term Value
The modernisation of the Waynesboro facility is part of Hood Industries’ ongoing commitment to improving its operational performance and advancing technological capabilities. By integrating cutting-edge solutions such as hybrid sawlines, AI-powered tools, and high-efficiency kilns, the facility will be equipped to meet the growing demands of the market while reducing environmental impact.
The use of energy-efficient technologies such as the Continuous Dual Path Kilns will contribute to Hood Industries’ sustainability goals, ensuring that the facility operates at optimal efficiency while reducing its carbon footprint. The AI-powered systems will provide real-time data to optimise every stage of the manufacturing process, improving not just performance but also the long-term durability of the facility’s equipment.
Looking Ahead to the Future
The modernisation project is expected to be completed by early October 2026, marking the beginning of a new era for Hood Industries’ Waynesboro facility. The upgrades will enable the company to increase production capacity, improve energy efficiency, and enhance product quality, positioning Hood Industries for continued growth in the competitive wood processing industry.
With Comact’s expertise and Hood Industries’ vision for the future, the Waynesboro facility is set to become a model for modern wood processing plants. As the industry continues to evolve, the partnership between these two companies ensures that Hood Industries will remain at the forefront of innovation in the sector.
The collaboration between Hood Industries and Comact represents a major step in the evolution of the wood processing industry. By modernising the Waynesboro, MS facility, Hood Industries is demonstrating its commitment to operational excellence, sustainability, and cutting-edge technology. With a focus on energy efficiency, increased capacity, and advanced AI tools, the project will ensure that the Waynesboro facility remains a cornerstone of Hood Industries’ success for years to come.
