The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) International Board of Directors has announced the appointment of Dr. Subhra Bhattacharjee as the new Director General, effective October 1, 2024. Dr. Bhattacharjee, who brings over two decades of expertise in climate change, sustainable development, and public policy, will lead FSC as it continues to promote responsible forest management globally.
Dr. Bhattacharjee’s career spans significant roles across international organizations, including the United Nations, as well as key positions at the Reserve Bank of India and in academia. She holds a Master of Philosophy in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University and a Ph.D. in economics from Iowa State University.
Stuart Valintine, Chair of the FSC International Board of Directors, expressed confidence in Bhattacharjee’s leadership, stating, “Subhra’s expertise in international development and leadership will be pivotal as she takes the helm during this critical phase of FSC’s growth.”
Dr. Bhattacharjee’s vision aligns closely with FSC’s mission of strengthening global forest stewardship. She emphasized the urgency of addressing climate change and biodiversity loss, saying, “FSC’s mission is more crucial than ever as we work to conserve, restore, and sustainably manage forests while respecting forest-dependent communities. I am honored to join FSC and look forward to collaborating with its members and partners to maximize forests’ contributions to sustainable development.”
Kim Carstensen, the outgoing Director General, praised FSC’s progress during his 12-year tenure and wished Bhattacharjee success in her new role. “FSC has played a critical role in ensuring sustainable forest practices globally, and Subhra’s vision and expertise are exactly what the organization needs to face the challenges ahead,” Carstensen noted.
Dr. Peter Alele, FSC Africa’s Regional Director, welcomed Bhattacharjee, highlighting her appointment as a key moment for FSC Africa. “Her extensive experience and leadership will be invaluable as we work to expand FSC’s footprint across the continent and advance sustainable forestry in Africa,” said Alele.
FSC recently announced a major step forward with the approval of a legal entity in Africa, marking a new era for the organization in the region. This move is expected to strengthen FSC’s mission of promoting responsible forest management and creating a sustainable future for Africa’s forests.
Dr. Bhattacharjee’s appointment heralds a new chapter for FSC as it continues its mission to protect and responsibly manage the world’s forests, ensuring their resilience for future generations.
