Forestry and timber industry leaders meet UK forestry minister to gain support

Leaders from the forestry and timber industries recently met with UK Forestry Minister Mary Creagh to seek her support for the Timber in Construction Roadmap. Stuart Goodall, Chief Executive of Confor, and Andrew Carpenter, Chief Executive of the Structural Timber Association (STA), were pleased to receive a very positive response from the Minister regarding the continuation of the roadmap, which was developed in collaboration with the previous government.

“The Roadmap is not a party-political document, it’s an opportunity to decarbonise construction and house-building, and to support home-grown timber with the benefits that brings for domestic economic growth and jobs,” said Stuart Goodall. “The Minister came across as enthusiastic about reducing the emissions from construction and could see that timber has an important role to play in that.”

The primary goal of the meeting was to secure the Minister’s backing and to encourage Mary Creagh to write to her counterparts in relevant departments, asking them to continue the cross-departmental work that had been initiated by the previous government to implement the Roadmap. The Minister confirmed she would take this step, and it is hoped that a positive response will be received before the year’s end.

The Minister also confirmed her attendance at the Confor policy conference in Westminster on 5th December, where she will address the industry. Stuart Goodall used the opportunity to highlight the National Wood Strategy for England as an important tool in helping to deliver the Roadmap for domestic timber.

“We had a very positive meeting with the Minister. There’s a lot that industry and government can be working on together to deliver the Government’s aspirations for the economy and net zero, and we look forward to working with Minister Creagh on that,” concluded Goodall.
