Felix Schoeller, the global specialty paper manufacturer, is taking decisive steps to secure its long-term competitiveness with a strategic realignment of its global décor business. The initiative, part of the company’s Reinvent corporate strategy, focuses on optimising production structures and expanding its international presence.
A significant component of this strategy involves consolidating plant operations in Germany. As part of these efforts, the company has announced the closure of its Penig plant by 2025. The product portfolio from Penig will be distributed to other facilities, including the Osnabrück site, which will handle black decor and backer papers moving forward. CEO Hans-Christoph Gallenkamp described the decision as difficult but necessary due to high costs and ongoing market volatility. “We explored all possible options to maintain the site, but long-term economic viability was unachievable,” Gallenkamp explained. Felix Schoeller is working with employees and the works council to ensure socially responsible solutions.
In tandem with these structural adjustments, Felix Schoeller is investing in its global production network. In Osnabrück, capacity is being expanded through targeted investments. Meanwhile, in China, the company is finalizing the full acquisition of its former joint venture, Winbon Technocell, making China an integral part of its international operations. Additionally, Felix Schoeller has strengthened its position in Turkey by establishing a dedicated team in Istanbul to serve this growing market.
Gallenkamp emphasized that these strategic measures are crucial for maintaining a competitive edge and ensuring reliable, future-oriented customer supply. “With our clear vision for the future, we are responding to evolving market conditions and implementing our plan with determination,” he stated.
Founded in 1895, Felix Schoeller remains a family-owned business with 17 locations across ten countries. The company offers a diverse range of paper products for industries such as photography, digital printing, furniture, medical applications, fashion, and packaging. Since 2018, the company has been led by fifth-generation CEO Hans-Christoph Gallenkamp.
