Around 40 built environment professionals were treated to a special evening session with talks exploring three of the shortlisted entries to the Wood Awards, as momentum builds towards the Ceremony on November 23.

Each of the evening’s projects came from the commercial section of the Wood Awards and made use of mass timber to create sustainable, innovative, and daring buildings – across a range of building types.

Beginning with a special presentation on ABBA Arena, attendees learned about the challenges of building a stadium out of timber, from the initial pitch through to its planned deconstruction and transportation to another site.

This was followed by an examination of Gramophone Works, revealing the construction of this unique building, and the ways in which timber was able to lend advantages – and an additional floor – to this project.

The final presentation looked into Brent Cross Town Visitor’s Pavilion, where a distinctive combination of spruce and larch helped to express the developer’s vision for a hospitable and sustainable new town.

Hosted at the Building Centre, this ‘Wood Awards Live’ session took place within the new exhibition of 13 building models now in place – and is open to visitors until at least 10 December.

This special exhibition allows visitors to find out more about each of the 32 shortlisted entries to the Wood Awards, and to view some of this award-winning architecture in a series of incredible miniatures.

“The Wood Awards is unique; both through the rigorous judging which takes place with in-person visits to each building and in the way it encompasses all forms of material design – both big and small.

“From stadiums to private houses and furniture, timber is increasingly the top choice for sustainably conscious designers, and the Wood Awards is the premiere competition for celebrating design.

“It has been a real privilege this year for Timber Development UK to organise these awards along with these two exhibitions; and show the many ways wood is helping to transform our built environment.

“We invite all to come to view this free exhibition at the Building Centre and learn more about the extraordinary design innovation which is right now taking place through choosing to build with wood.”
