The European Pallet Association (EPAL) is ushering in a new era of supply chain efficiency with the digitalisation of its widely used Euro pallets. Since the launch of the QR-coded EPAL Euro pallets in January 2024, over 4 million units have already been produced, making it a key milestone in the industry’s digital transformation. This rapid adoption signals a growing trend in pallet logistics, with an increasing number of EPAL licensees integrating QR codes into their production lines.

These QR codes, individually linked to each pallet, bring a host of advantages to the supply chain. Every EPAL Euro pallet QR is paired with a serial number that allows for precise tracking and full transparency of its location, lifecycle, and usage across the supply chain. The ability to scan the QR codes—either manually or automatically—without needing additional labels or complex systems enhances operational simplicity and visibility. Despite the new digital features, the EPAL Euro pallet QR remains fully compatible with the open EPAL pool, ensuring seamless exchanges within the system, just as with traditional pallets.

Michael Brandt, Head of Logistics & Innovation at EPAL, highlights the significance of this move: “With the EPAL Euro pallet QR, we are bringing the idea of open pallet exchange into the digital age while retaining the proven characteristics of the EPAL Euro pallet—high quality, reliability, and durability. The fast adoption of the EPAL Euro pallet QR is a clear signal of the industry’s demand for greater transparency and efficiency in pallet logistics.”

The widespread uptake of QR-coded pallets is not just a technical upgrade but a strategic move towards a more interconnected and efficient supply chain. The digital tools accompanying the EPAL Euro pallet QR, such as the Digital Pallet Passport and the EPAL Pallet App, enable users to track and record each pallet’s journey throughout the supply chain. With a simple scan, detailed data such as the pallet’s production site, repair history, and sustainability credentials are easily accessible, offering valuable insights for businesses seeking to optimise their logistics operations.

The milestone of producing 4 million QR-coded pallets marks only the beginning of EPAL’s broader digitisation goals. EPAL is already working on serialising additional pallet types, including the EPAL industrial pallets and EPAL CP pallets, with QR codes. This expanded digital framework will ultimately provide an even more comprehensive solution for the global logistics sector, further streamlining operations and ensuring that the entire EPAL pallet pool remains transparent, efficient, and aligned with modern supply chain demands.

As the world’s largest open pallet pool, with over 675 million EPAL Euro pallets in circulation, EPAL continues to be a pivotal player in promoting sustainability within the logistics industry. The adoption of QR codes is part of EPAL’s ongoing efforts to lead the way in creating a more sustainable and circular economy. By enhancing the traceability and efficiency of pallet usage, EPAL’s digital shift not only improves supply chain performance but also contributes to climate protection by reducing waste and conserving valuable resources.

In conclusion, EPAL’s QR-coded Euro pallets are setting new standards in supply chain management, blending the reliability of traditional wooden pallets with cutting-edge digital capabilities. This evolution supports a more transparent, efficient, and sustainable logistics ecosystem, benefiting businesses across industries while aligning with global sustainability goals.
