EPAL

Recently the board of the European Pallet Association eV (EPAL) decided to allow the repair of EPAL class C Euro pallets with used boards and blocks. This promotes the reuse of wooden components in the sense of the circular economy and thus serves to protect the climate and wood resources.

At the meeting on March 10, 2022 in Berlin, the EPAL Board of Directors decided to allow the repair of EPAL class C Euro pallets with used boards and blocks. The new regulation will come into force on April 1, 2022.

Until now, all used EPAL Euro pallets had to be repaired with new boards and blocks. In the future, this will continue to apply to class A and B EPAL Euro pallets.

The aim of allowing the repair of EPAL class C Euro pallets with used parts is to further strengthen the sustainability of the EPAL Euro pallet pool. The reuse and exchange as well as the repair of EPAL Euro pallets in the open EPAL Euro pallet exchange pool are already a prime example of a sustainable circular economy. Allowing the reuse of used parts makes another valuable contribution to this. With the reduction in the use of new wood when repairing EPAL Euro pallets, the resource wood is additionally protected and the energy and CO2 balance of the repair of EPAL Euro pallets is improved.

Paulo Verdasca, representative of EPAL Portugal mentioned, “The reuse and exchange of EPAL Euro pallets in the EPAL Euro pallet pool already corresponds in the best way to the principle of the circular economy: reuse – repair – recycle. We want to extend the principle of reuse to repair and therefore enable repair with undamaged used boards and blocks. Due to the high quality of new EPAL Euro pallets, if other parts of the pallet are irreparably damaged, their individual components are often of such high quality that they can be used for repairs without loss of quality. This conserves wood resources, reduces the use of energy and thus contributes to climate protection.”
