Dieffenbacher, the German machine and plant manufacturer, was contracted by Chinese wood-based panel producer A Beautiful Family Plate Making Co. Ltd. (BFP) for a complete Fine OSB plant in Guangxi, China. BFP’s new plant is expected to be installed in the second quarter of 2023. In the fall of 2023, the first board will be manufactured. Everything from chip flaking to raw board handling will be provided by Dieffenbacher.

An economical alternative to plywood

“Fine OSB is increasingly popular in China,” said Matthias Rübsam, Area Sales Director at Dieffenbacher. “The lower cost of the raw material makes OSB an economical alternative to plywood for almost every application. Fine OSB, however, overcomes traditional OSB’s poor laminating capability, caused by its uneven board surface.”

The dryer, screens, particle preparation, material recovery, glue preparation, dosing, glueing system, forming station, forming line, CPS+ continuous press system, electrics, and plant automation are all covered by the contract. The facility will have a robust capacity to make 500,000 m3 of Fine OSB annually. To improve the top surface’s structure, Fine OSB uses layers of particleboard on top and bottom to cover the OSB core layer. This makes it feasible for additional processing, such as short-cycle press lamination or coating with melamine or phenolic paper on both sides.

According to Rubsam, fine OSB combines the superior mechanical qualities of OSB, such as moisture resistance, robustness, stable size, and strong screw-holding force, with the surface quality of particleboard. Consequently, it is the ideal product for use in a variety of fields, including flooring, custom furniture manufacturing, home furnishings, and interior design. He said that the Chinese government has such a strong belief in the product that Fine OSB has become a national standard in China.

Dieffenbacher, a fifth-generation family-owned company, has worked with sustainability for a very long time and in many different contexts. The company has responsibly combined its current measurements and goals in their sustainability campaign “Dieffenbacher on the move” in order to manage their operations in an even more targeted manner, expand them, and present them clearly.
