Celebrating Earth Day: The Pallet Loop’s sustainable impact

 Friday, April 25, 2025

This Earth Day, The Pallet Loop reflects on a recent two-day trip with associates from British Gypsum – looking at the different stages involved in the creation and use of their circular economy pallets. On the first day they started at the beginning of the LOOP pallet process for British Gypsum, visiting the company’s Kirkby Thore plant near Penrith.

On site, the team saw stacks of green LOOP pallets waiting to be used, then watched the end of the plasterboard production process and pallets getting loaded with bagged plaster and plasterboard. Thanks to British Gypsum for hosting this part of the trip and sharing their knowledge and insights. It was great to see our pallets in action, on the brink of entering the building materials supply chain.

On day two, the team traveled to Scotland to trace the origins of the timber used in LOOP pallets and witness the beginning of its journey from forest to factory floor.

Their first stop was Tilhill Forestry – a division of BSW Group and the UK’s leading sustainable forestry and timber harvesting company. Tilhill plays a vital role in managing forests and woodlands, planting, protecting, and nurturing trees, and harvesting top-quality timber using state-of-the-art equipment.

Since its founding in 1948, Tilhill has planted over one billion trees and annually harvests around 1.5 million logs, contributing £100 million to the forestry sector each year. The Pallet Loop offered thanks to the Tilhill team for guiding them through the forest and offering insight into every stage of the woodland creation process – from selecting the right tree species to planting, maintenance, and eventual harvesting. It was a truly fascinating and informative morning.

From Tilhill, the team travelled to BSW Timber in Dalbeattie, to see one of the company’s sawmills in actions. This was another inspiring visit, which showed how piles of timber get turned into FSC certified sawn products for fencing, landscaping, cladding, construction, and of course – pallets. The Dalbeattie site covers 56 hectares and has an annual output of more than 330,000 cubic metres of sawn timber.

This trip served as a powerful reminder that timber is one of the most sustainable and renewable materials available. It reinforced why recovering their pallets for reuse is so essential—ensuring that more timber can be directed toward long-term carbon storage solutions. If someone is not already part of the LOOP and returning signature green pallets, now’s the perfect time to start!
