CDM Okna, a leader in the Polish premium wooden joinery market, has made a significant investment with the acquisition of the Saomad Performance 5, a state-of-the-art five-axis machining centre. This advanced technology will unlock new production capabilities, allowing the company to craft wooden windows with complex geometries while ensuring top-tier quality standards. As Grzegorz Król, CEO of CDM Okna, explains, the addition of the Saomad Performance 5 machining centre marks the introduction of a new window design concept, featuring a segmented frame. This innovative design enables the replacement of individual damaged elements without the need to dismantle the entire window, drastically reducing service costs and repair times. Furthermore, the new frame system enhances the durability of the product, providing customers with a higher-value product that requires less maintenance.
Dual-Colour Frame and Enhanced Durability
One of the standout features of CDM Okna’s new product line is the option for dual-colour painting on frame segments. This innovation simplifies the finishing process by eliminating the need for multiple masking stages, significantly cutting down on time-consuming operations that have previously posed technological challenges. The segmented frame also maximises the glazing surface, allowing for slimmer profiles that provide improved daylighting for interiors while maintaining high insulation values.
Targeted not only at the domestic market but also Southern European markets, including Spain, Italy, and Greece, CDM Okna’s new product is designed to meet the increasing demand for superior design and high-quality joinery in these regions.
Saomad Performance 5: Advanced Technology for Precision Machining
Maciej Szydlowski, from ITA, CDM Okna’s partner for Saomad machine implementation and servicing, outlines the technical advancements of the Performance 5 system. The machining centre is designed as a modular production line, comprising three key zones: loading, machining, and unloading. A single system controls the entire production process, ensuring smooth and automated operations. A key challenge in the installation was ensuring the machine’s precise alignment, with allowable geometric deviations not exceeding 0.02 mm to guarantee the accuracy of wooden component fittings.
Equipped with five spindles—single-axis, dual-axis, and five-axis—the Performance 5 increases flexibility, allowing for precise machining of even the most intricate profiles. The liquid-cooled HSD spindles maintain high precision, and with a machining time of less than one minute per element, the system’s efficiency far exceeds previous solutions at CDM Okna’s facility.
Software Integration and Real-Time Quality Control
An essential aspect of the Saomad Performance 5 system is its integration with Archimede software from Kosmosoft, which automates the entire production process, from order entry to final machining. This intuitive software interface enables operators to manage two machines simultaneously, overseeing loading, machining, and unloading processes. The system also incorporates a real-time monitoring camera network, allowing operators to identify material defects or tool damage early, preventing costly production halts.
A New Production Philosophy: Flexibility and Efficiency
Performance 5 represents a new era in machining philosophy, with a unique system that uses two cross-cuts and one longitudinal cut from a single clamp, ensuring excellent profile parallelism and high dimensional consistency. The machine features a built-in stock of 400 timber blanks, which are automatically drawn for machining, allowing for extended operator-free autonomy. The system can efficiently manage orders out of sequence, ensuring maximum productivity by reducing tool change times.
Energy-saving solutions are a significant part of the Performance 5’s design. Motors only activate when machining an element, ensuring minimal energy consumption. Coupled with CDM Okna’s photovoltaic farm, which supplies about 40% of the plant’s energy, this investment contributes to the company’s commitment to sustainability and cost reduction.
