Ahlstrom, a global leader in sustainable fiber-based specialty materials, has signed an agreement to sell its Aspa pulp mill, located in Sweden, to Sweden Timber. This transaction marks a significant step in Ahlstrom’s ongoing growth and transformation journey, reinforcing its strategic focus on sustainable specialty materials.
The Aspa pulp mill, known for producing both bleached and unbleached softwood pulp, plays a crucial role in the global paper industry. With an annual production capacity of approximately 200,000 tonnes and a workforce of 174 employees, the mill’s products are sold worldwide and serve a wide range of applications.
Over the years, several external parties have shown interest in acquiring the Aspa facility. For Ahlstrom, it was essential to choose a buyer that could ensure the mill’s long-term success and future development. Sweden Timber, a Swedish wood processing company with expertise in papermaking and wood composites, emerged as the ideal candidate.
“Aspa mill and its employees have been instrumental in Ahlstrom’s success, and we are deeply grateful for their contributions. We believe Sweden Timber, with its focus on expanding pulp production capabilities, will provide a great new home for Aspa,” said Wolfgang Laures, Chief Operating Officer at Ahlstrom. “This divestment allows Ahlstrom to concentrate on our core specialty materials portfolio.”
Sweden Timber has expressed enthusiasm for the acquisition, with CEO Mikael Arvidsson stating, “We look forward to working with the talented team at Aspa to continue serving the mill’s existing customers. We are committed to maintaining the high quality of Aspa’s pulp and ensuring its continued growth.”
The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2024. During the transition, Ahlstrom is committed to maintaining business continuity and supporting the mill and its employees as they move forward under new ownership.
