Ahlstrom Sets Verified Science-Based Targets for Net-Zero Emissions by 2050

Ahlstrom, a leading global company in fiber-based specialty materials, has received approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its ambitious near- and long-term emissions reduction targets, setting a verified path to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. These targets align with Ahlstrom’s mission to “Purify and Protect with Every Fiber for a Sustainable World,” and position the company as a forward-thinking leader in climate responsibility within the materials sector.

The SBTi has verified that Ahlstrom’s near-term scope 1 and 2 emissions targets meet the rigorous standards required to help limit global warming to no more than 1.5°C. By 2030, Ahlstrom commits to reducing its absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 42% from a 2021 baseline. The company has also pledged to cut its scope 3 GHG emissions — which include emissions from purchased goods and services, fuel, and energy-related activities, as well as upstream transportation and distribution — by 25% over the same period.

Ahlstrom’s long-term targets set even more substantial goals, including a 90% reduction in absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2050, alongside a 90% reduction in scope 3 GHG emissions. These targets cover the full life cycle of products, from upstream activities to the processing, use, and end-of-life treatment of sold products.
Collaboration Across Value Chains is Key, Says CEO

Ahlstrom’s President and CEO, Helen Mets, highlighted the importance of action and industry-wide collaboration to meet these targets. “Sustainability is at the heart of what we do, and we’re fully committed to this journey,” said Mets. “Having our targets verified is a significant milestone, but it’s our actions that will drive real impact. We’ve made strides in scope 1 and 2 emissions, and we’re working to tackle scope 3. To succeed, collaboration across the full value chain is essential. We’re determined to lead by developing products that are safe, sustainable, and can help reduce our customers’ carbon footprint.”
About the Science Based Targets Initiative

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a partnership among CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). SBTi provides guidance on science-based target setting and assesses corporate emissions targets to ensure alignment with the latest climate science and global climate goals.

Ahlstrom’s verified climate targets demonstrate the company’s commitment to sustainability and reinforce its leadership in fiber-based specialty materials, aiming to make a lasting impact on the industry and the environment.
