Ahlstrom, a leading global company in fiber-based specialty materials, has received approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its ambitious near- and long-term emissions reduction targets, setting a verified path to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. These targets align with Ahlstrom’s mission to “Purify and Protect with Every Fiber for a Sustainable World,” and position the company as a forward-thinking leader in climate responsibility within the materials sector.
The SBTi has verified that Ahlstrom’s near-term scope 1 and 2 emissions targets meet the rigorous standards required to help limit global warming to no more than 1.5°C. By 2030, Ahlstrom commits to reducing its absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 42% from a 2021 baseline. The company has also pledged to cut its scope 3 GHG emissions — which include emissions from purchased goods and services, fuel, and energy-related activities, as well as upstream transportation and distribution — by 25% over the same period.
Ahlstrom’s long-term targets set even more substantial goals, including a 90% reduction in absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2050, alongside a 90% reduction in scope 3 GHG emissions. These targets cover the full life cycle of products, from upstream activities to the processing, use, and end-of-life treatment of sold products.

Ahlstrom’s President and CEO, Helen Mets, highlighted the importance of action and industry-wide collaboration to meet these targets. “Sustainability is at the heart of what we do, and we’re fully committed to this journey,” said Mets. “Having our targets verified is a significant milestone, but it’s our actions that will drive real impact.
