Ahlstrom joins World Business Council for Sustainable Development

Ahlstrom, a global leader in fiber-based specialty materials, has become a member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), aligning itself with a global coalition committed to accelerating the world’s transition to sustainability. Through this partnership, Ahlstrom aims to contribute to critical environmental objectives, including climate action, clean air and water initiatives, decarbonization, biodiversity preservation, and the reduction of plastic pollution.

Ahlstrom’s President and CEO, Helen Mets, expressed the company’s commitment to advancing sustainable solutions, stating, “Sustainability is at the heart of Ahlstrom’s mission. Joining WBCSD gives us the opportunity to work with other industry leaders to tackle global challenges and move closer to a circular economy. Guided by our purpose, ‘Purify and Protect with Every Fiber for a Sustainable World,’ we’re dedicated to creating safe, sustainable fiber-based solutions.”

WBCSD President and CEO Peter Bakker welcomed Ahlstrom, acknowledging the value of their expertise in sustainable materials. “Ahlstrom’s membership strengthens our mission to transform industries and scale solutions for a sustainable future, one that supports 9 billion people to live well within planetary boundaries by 2050. Together, we can drive impactful change on a global scale,” Bakker said.

Johan Lunabba, Ahlstrom’s Vice President of Sustainability and Public Affairs, emphasized the importance of partnerships in achieving sustainability goals. “Integrating sustainability into our innovation pipeline is vital for building a resilient, future-ready portfolio. Collaborating closely with our sustainability-focused customers and suppliers, we aim to create scalable, impactful solutions,” Lunabba explained, highlighting WBCSD’s role in fostering this collaboration.

By joining WBCSD, Ahlstrom plans to leverage its expertise in fiber-based materials to support global sustainability initiatives, working alongside forward-thinking companies to promote innovative, commercially viable solutions for a sustainable future.

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is a global network of over 225 of the world’s leading businesses committed to transforming systems to create a better world where more than 9 billion people can live well, within the limits of the planet, by mid-century. Together, they are reshaping the systems in which they operate to mitigate the climate crisis, restore natural ecosystems, and address inequality.

WBCSD accelerates transformation across value chains within key sectors and works to reshape the financial system to reward sustainable leadership with a lower cost of capital. By promoting the exchange of best practices, enhancing business performance, offering educational resources, building partnerships, and influencing policy agendas, WBCSD drives business progress and strengthens accountability across its members.
