Vietnam timber exporters target Greece and EU markets amid Donald Trump tariff pressures

Vietnam’s timber industry is accelerating efforts to diversify export markets, with new trade engagement underway in Athens. This shift follows increased pressure from tariff policies introduced during the administration of Donald Trump. The United States has historically been Vietnam’s largest market for wood products.

More than 45 per cent of Vietnam’s timber exports were previously directed to the US. This accounted for approximately US$18.5 billion in trade value. However, changing trade conditions have prompted a strategic pivot. European markets are now being actively pursued.

A virtual timber business forum was recently convened by the Vietnamese Embassy in Athens. The event marked the first formal engagement of its kind between Vietnamese exporters and the Federation of Industries of Greece. The initiative reflects growing interest in Vietnamese wood products within the Greek market.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders. Among them was Phạm Thị Thu Hương. Representatives from the Vietnam Timber and Forest Products Association were also present. Business leaders from Ho Chi Minh City and Đồng Nai province participated as well.

The forum was organised to strengthen trade links. It was also intended to explore new commercial opportunities. Vietnamese suppliers are seeking to establish a stronger foothold in Europe. Greece is being viewed as a potential gateway market.

Ambassador Hương noted that interest from Greek businesses has been increasing. She highlighted recent efforts by the embassy to facilitate trade connections. A Greek company had visited Vietnam. This visit resulted in agreements to import plywood, particleboard and interior materials.

Such developments indicate rising demand. They also demonstrate the effectiveness of targeted trade diplomacy. Business relationships are being actively cultivated.

According to Ngô Sỹ Hoài, Vietnam’s wood products are now exported to 118 markets worldwide. The country ranks as the second-largest global exporter of timber products. It is also recognised as the leading exporter of outdoor furniture.

Vietnamese producers are seeking to expand partnerships. European buyers are being prioritised. The EU–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement is expected to play a central role.

The agreement provides improved access to EU markets. Tariff reductions are included. Regulatory alignment has also been facilitated. These factors create favourable conditions for trade expansion.

Export growth to Europe has already been observed. Shipments to Spain increased by 63 per cent year-on-year. This surge reflects shifting sourcing strategies among European importers. Chinese and Russian suppliers are being replaced in some cases.

Vietnam is positioning itself as an alternative supplier. Its competitive pricing and manufacturing capacity are key advantages. Quality standards are also being improved.

The move towards Europe is part of a broader strategy. It is designed to reduce reliance on a single market. Trade risks are being mitigated through diversification.

At the forum, Loukia A. Saranti expressed support for the initiative. She stated that the federation is ready to act as a bridge between Vietnamese exporters and European buyers. This role is expected to extend beyond Greece.

She also requested further details on Vietnam’s export categories. This information will be shared with federation members. Preparations are underway for a future business forum.

The collaboration is still at an early stage. However, it reflects a clear direction of travel. Trade links between Vietnam and Europe are being strengthened.

The timber sector remains highly sensitive to global trade policies. Tariff changes can quickly alter market dynamics. Vietnam’s response has been proactive.

New partnerships are being explored. Market access is being expanded. Strategic agreements are being leveraged.

The engagement with Greece highlights this approach. It demonstrates how diplomatic channels can support industry growth. Commercial opportunities are being actively pursued.

Vietnam’s timber exporters are adapting to a changing global landscape. Flexibility is being prioritised. Long-term resilience is being built.

As trade flows continue to evolve, Europe is expected to play a larger role. The outcome of these efforts will shape the future direction of Vietnam’s wood industry.
