Stora Enso recently reached a new height of excellence with a new feather in its crown. It has been recently ranked as the top leader in the Financial Times Diversity Leaders index for its systematic working procedures. The annual rating published by Financial Times (FT) and Statista lists the 850 top-ranked European companies across sectors. The ranking methodology includes independent views of more than 100,000 surveyed employees across the continent.

“This ranking is recognition and encouragement for the work we have been doing systematically in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI),” says Katariina Kravi, Head of People and Culture at Stora Enso. “Promoting DEI is a long-term commitment and requires a persistence that we will continue in the future. This benefits employees and safety, as well as brings greater business success for our company.”

A call to take part in the surveys and evaluate companies was first published on ft.com in May 2023. The employee surveys were conducted using online access panels, consisting of representative samples of the workforce in each of the 16 countries covered in the ranking (even if their employers are headquartered elsewhere).

Without being told the purpose of the exercise, participants were asked which company or institution they worked for. Survey participants were then asked to what extent they thought their employer promoted diversity on a scale from zero to 10. Employees were also asked to give their opinion on a series of statements surrounding age, gender, ethnicity, disability, and sexual orientation. The rate of agreement or disagreement regarding the statements was captured using a five-point Likert scale. The highest-scoring factors for each company are shown in the Diversity Leaders ranking table. This was the way by which the survey was executed while the the companies were ranked accordingly.

Stora Enso has rightly topped the list the company tires its best to maintain the systems and of its work places. Further highlighting the company’s ways of working Katariina said, “Diversity workshops and follow-ups at the local team level have been one part of our work as well as continuous communications of the importance of diversity. Perceptions of diversity are also a key indicator in employee engagement surveys. Diversity is not profiled as an issue for human resources only — it is a management topic and is naturally part of the management agenda.”
