Ikea opening in Panama and Costa Rica

Inter IKEA Systems B.V., the franchisor behind IKEA’s global concept, has recently announced, that it has signed exclusive franchise agreements with Sarton Group to explore expansion into Panama and Costa Rica.

Sarton Group, which already operates IKEA outlets in the Balearic and Canary Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic, will now carry out similar roles in these Central American markets. The deal enhances IKEA’s brand presence in the Americas and aligns with its long‑term growth strategy in the region

Quotes from Stakeholders

Maria Johansson, IKEA’s Expansion Manager, framed the deal as “continuously seeking opportunities to expand our reach and enhance accessibility.” She added that working with franchisees helps develop the IKEA brand in ways that feel relevant and inspiring

Tony Tavira, Retail Manager at Sarton Group, called the expansion “exciting and significant,” saying their experience in nearby markets equips them well to serve customers’ needs and “contribute to growing the IKEA brand” in both new countries

What’s Next

For now, IKEA hasn’t revealed when or where the new stores will open. Those details, including formats—full stores, smaller city stores, or order‑pickup points—are expected in coming months. Media reports say local ministries in Costa Rica see this move as a signal of confidence in their investment appeal.

Broader Industry View

This expansion continues a broader trend: global retailers targeting growing Latin American markets. IKEA previously partnered with Falabella for expansion in Chile, Peru, and Colombia. That deal paved the way from three to twelve stores across those markets.

By adding Panama and Costa Rica, IKEA continues strengthening its regional footprint. The Sarton Group’s familiarity with local supply chains, customer preferences, and operational norms could help IKEA adapt more nimbly than if it entered independently.
