2023 will be the ‘European Year of Skills’

The European social partners in the furniture and woodworking sectors, represented by CEI-Bois and EFIC, as well as their European trade union representatives, EFBWW, applaud the Commission’s decision to designate 2023 as the “European Year of Skills.” In keeping with what President Von den Leyer said during her State of the Union address, the woodworking sector strongly assents that shortage of skills in Europe is an issue that needs to be addressed immediately. The industry is in unanimous agreement that this can be achieved by stressing on new qualifications, investment on professional education, upskilling and attracting the right skills to aid woodworking industry companies in cementing Europe’s growth.

To highlight new opportunities and innovations for the woodworking sector

A hybrid structure will be used for the joint expert meeting, which will be held in Brussels on February 13th, 2023. It intends to address shared skill challenges, pinpoint a course for cooperation, and serve as the cornerstone for supporting and expanding apprenticeship mobility in these industries and across Europe. This should help close the skills and qualification gaps in businesses, create new job opportunities, and assist the green and digital transitions in Europe, also helping to foster ‘Made in Europe’. Goods and services. The European social partners for the woodworking and furniture industries came up with the plan to engage in the “2023 European Year for skills” by hosting a dedicated expert panel discussion on the fundamentals of their joint woodworking and furniture Sector Social Dialogue. A European best practices document shall also be furnished to commemorate the commitment of the woodworking industries in inspiring new initiatives for the upcoming woodworking generations. Employing over 200 million people in more than 300 thousand companies, an array of professions and product innovations exemplify the European woodworking sector.

A low-carbon bioeconomy and circular economy are also facilitated by the woodworking and furniture industries, as wood is a naturally renewable bio-based resource with carbon storage capabilities. One of the primary raw materials used in the manufacturing of furniture is wood, and wood-based products are essential to realising the goals of the EU Green Deal and attaining a sustainable, environmentally friendly, and carbon-neutral Europe.

A highly qualified workforce, flexibility to integrate new skills and competences is the requirement for the digital and ecological transition. This meeting is expected to pursue companies with a good number of reasons to invest in skilled and qualified employees all over the processing chain.
