GNC for honours senior proprietor of Fagus-Grecon

 Thursday, November 7, 2019

The German National Committee for Monument Preservation honours Ernst Greten, senior proprietor of der Fagus-GreCon Greten GmbH & Co.KG,with the Schinkel-Ring. Ernst Greten receives this award for his “extraordinary commitment in the renovation and restoration of the Fagus-Factory in Alfeld in compliance with the regulations for historical monuments” – following the German National Committee for Monument Preservation (Deutsche Nationalkomitee für Denkmalschutz / DNK) in its explanatory statement. The Fagus-Factory was founded by his great-grand father Carl Benscheidt in 1911. The Fagus-Factory went down in history thanks to the design of the – at that time still unknown – architect and later founder of the Bauhaus. Still today, the Fagus-Factory is considered to be the original building of modern industrial architecture and is UNESCO World Heritage since 2011. As cultural institution in an industrial plant, the Fagus-Factory welcomes more than 25,000 visitors every year.

With the award, the committee underlines Greten’s role as shareholder of the company whose actions “were not primarily for the economic benefit, but rather were guided by the considerations of monument preservation”.

This process started with the decision of the brothers Ernst and Gerd Greten in the 80ies not to sellbut to carry out a fundamental restoration of the ageing building in which shoe lasts for the industrial footwear manufacture have been produced since 1911 until today. They integrated their former companies GreCon-Anlagen and GreCon-Elektronik and thereby also laid the foundation for present company Fagus-GreCon.

With this decision, the entrepreneurial family Greten took on the responsibility to combine tradition and modernity, culture and business to a new quality for the benefit of the staff and the visitors of the building.

This objective has been achieved. Not only the number of annual visitors of the Fagus-Factory increases, but also the company’s business divisions “fire protection”, “measuring technology”, “inspection systems” and “shoe lasts and moulds” provide demanding solutions for different applications in different industries. Thanks to numerous innovations and the commitment of the worldwide more than 650 employees, the company could establish itself as internationally leading partner for its customers.

Also on the occasion of the current award, Ernst Greten underlines the great importance of the employees and the political institutions as well as numerous associations; all of them made this success story possible thanks to their constructive and dedicated cooperation. For the future, Ernst Greten wishes that the Fagus-Factory “remains a living monument to which the public always has access”.
