Sonae Arauco signs wind energy purchase agreement with ENGIE

Sonae Arauco takes another step towards sustainability with its aim towards carbon neutrality. As one of the world’s leading companies in the wood-based solutions industry, it is committed to actively contributing to the sustainable transformation of the industry. The company recently concluded a wind energy purchase agreement (PPA) for Germany with ENGIE. The agreement will come into force on April 1.

A newly built wind farm in the Harz mountains will supply the factories in Nettgau, Meppen and Kaisersesch. This measure is expected to represent around 15 percent of consumption at these German Sonae Arauco factories. The company already produced its own energy from biomass in its facilities in Beeskow. Through the energy that ENGIE supplies to Sonae Arauco, the manufacturer receives certificates confirming that it comes from renewable energy sources.

“The determining factor in our decision to purchase wind energy is the desire to reduce our CO2 emissions in the long term”, says Steffen Körner, Managing Director of Sonae Arauco Germany. “The contract with ENGIE is initially valid until the end of 2028, which gives us the opportunity to adjust our needs after five years.”

Sonae Arauco devotes more concentration towards the sustainable development of its entire value chain, to reduce its ecological footprint. The PPA with ENGIE is part of a series of initiatives planned for the company’s various industrial units. Investments in renewable energy will cover a significant part of factories’ energy needs and reduce dependence on energy from fossil fuels. These measures are aligned with Sonae Arauco’s decarbonisation objectives.

In addition to the use of renewable energy, Sonae Arauco also contributes to the reduction of CO2 through its products. Since wood has a special capacity to store CO2, every year a large amount of CO2 is retained by the products that Sonae Arauco sells around the world. The company is currently developing several projects to address the challenge of climate change.

Expressing his views about the new development, Steffen Körner, General Manager and NEE Industrial Operations Director at Sonae Arauco said, “Sustainability is a fundamental pillar of our business strategy. One of the reasons why our partners choose us is that we develop, produce and supply our wood-based solutions in a sustainable way, using renewable and recyclable raw materials. For us, this also includes purchasing renewable energy. The PPA not only helps us reduce our emissions, but also our customers reduce emissions in the supply chain.”
