UPM Plywood along with VR is moving forward towards the fulfilment of its sustainable and environment friendly aims. The company and VR have agreed that VR will replace the fossil diesel it uses with renewable diesel in the same amount as the amount of diesel consumed in the domestic transportation of the UPM Pellos plywood factory. Taking this matter into consideration, UPM is delivering more into the sustainable awareness of the wood and woodworking industry.
UPM Pellos has improved its rail transport operating model by increasing the occupancy rate of the trains and enhancing the traction capacity, in addition to the new transport contract. This means using one locomotive instead of the previous two. UPM Pellos is located in Ristina and transports plywood by rail to the warehouse in Kouvola and to the port in Kotka.
Highlighting the main aims, logistics manager Juha Vallittu from UPM said, “UPM Plywood is constantly striving to reduce its carbon footprint. Emissions in the supply chain are mainly generated in the procurement of raw materials and product transportation. Pellos’ rail traffic’s more efficient operating model than before and the introduction of renewable diesel are good examples of constructive cooperation between companies, which reduces emissions in a tangible way.”
Only about 60 percent of Finland’s rail network has been electrified, so it is necessary to find other responsible alternatives alongside electricity. The contract concluded now is the first HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) contract made by VR for railway logistics, with which the customer’s transport emissions can be brought to almost zero.
“Our goal is to offer our customers responsible solutions and constantly develop new operating models together. Since other alternative driving forces for rail traffic, such as battery and hydrogen locomotive technology, are still in the development phase, the most practical solution for non-electrified track sections is currently renewable fuel,” says Joni Lehtonen , Commercial Director of VR Transpoint .
UPM Plywood a well known name of the wood industry, is committed to reducing the emissions of its value chains by 30 percent by 2030. VR is involved in halving traffic emissions by 2030 and striving towards a carbon-neutral Finland by 2035. Both these companies are setting their aims according to the UN’s sustainable development goals, while adding more value to the woodworking industry and its working dynamics.
