The Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA in Stuttgart, Germany has validated the safe processing of the Altendorf Group’s Hand Guard system. The Fraunhofer IPA has conducted a study to detect the best safety system in case of sliding table saws, that can not only mitigate injuries but can also prevent them.
The Fraunhofer IPA study is based on the results for capacitive and camera-based safety assistance systems. Both the systems were detected beneficial as they detected any hazardous situation and successfully removed the saw blade as quickly as possible. This prevents accident, thereby protecting the workers’ hand. Though both the system proved to be efficient yet the camera-based system stood out to be the more reliable one.
Dr. Birenbaum, Group Manager Manufacturing Systems, Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA has concluded, “Fraunhofer IPA has carried out measurements on different safety systems for sliding table saws: the two systems currently available on the market, capacitive and camera-based sensor technologies, were investigated. As a result, both the capacitive and the camera-based system reliably detected the test pieces under the selected test conditions and led to the lowering of the saw blades. However, only the camera-based system was able to avoid damage to the test specimens in all tests,” The camera-based system used in Altendorf Group’s Hand Guard proved its effective functionality successfully. It monitors a wide area around the saw table before the camera system detects hands entering the neighboring space.
The saw blade is lowered to prevent any accident that may occur as fingers and hands come into contact with the source of injury. It has also been proved that the system triggers in time even at approach speeds of 2m per second. The Fraunhofer IPA study has also left Peter Schwenk, CEO of the Altendorf Group all impressed, whereby he stated- “We are the world’s only supplier of sliding table saws to offer an AI- and camera-based safety assistance system on series machines. With the successful certification by the German Employers’ Liability Insurance Association for Wood and Metal, we are setting the future standard for safety in sliding table saws.”
