SCM Group to boast outstanding solutions at LIGNA 2017

 Friday, February 17, 2017

scm-groupBoasting a double-digit growth over the last two years and fast-selling new models, SCM Group participates in Ligna 2017 as a solid Group that has great confidence in the future of the entire industry.

And as a world industry leader, SCM Group is getting ready for the event knowing full well that thanks to the high technological level it has reached – it is more than able to offer its clients applicable “Industry 4.0” solutions. Practical solutions made possible by an ever growing data collection and analysis, to facilitate greater control over production quality and quantity, from technological and IT development of individual machines to improving their ability to operate in cells and cell systems.

Specifically, at Ligna 2017, on its enormous stand in Hall 13, the Group will display a cell system combined with robot, able to provide a concrete implementation of the “mass customisation” concept, all in order to meet all customer-specific needs, while maintaining the advantages of industrial production.

In terms of software and user interfaces, SCM Group is to present at Ligna 2017 some outstanding new solutions, starting from an interface with an innovative and stunning “multi-touch” system, with a 21-inch display and a new graphic look which makes preparation work, production control and diversification easy and safe for operators.

And regarding software specifically, SCM Group has completed a major “upgrade” of its Maestro suite. Excellent results have been achieved with beam saws using the new system optimiser, allowing an 80% reduction in computation time and 40-50% reduction in waste. The Watch system supervisor will demonstrate its great capabilities running by itself the cell system on view at Ligna 2017.

In general, the SCM Group software suites are designed as open systems that can operate with any type of machine, allowing total control over every machine function, while being easy and intuitive to use by any operator.

At Ligna 2017, SCM Group is to present more than sixty products out of its wide range, able to meet the needs of any type of company, from small local carpentry shop to large multinational corporations. In particular, following their extraordinary success during the Open House event, held at the beginning of the year in the Group’s headquarters in Rimini, Italy, the new Morbidelli Author M100 and M200 machining centres will be presented, ready to start the “AuthoR-Evolution”, along with additional new products shown in a world première and various other “upgrades” of the entire product line.

Industry 4.0 implementation – a mass customisation process

At Ligna 2017 SCM Group is to present a cell system that meets the needs for customised industrial production, implementing Industry 4.0 concepts.

The chosen practical example is a cell system that produces furniture parts. The system’s capacity is approximately 8-10 sets per shift. It is an automated system, where control over the entire process – from raw panels to the finished piece – is absolute. It is a solution that stands out for its low operational costs, as it requires only a single operator; its minimum handling requirements, thus preventing production defects; and its “lean” flow, with no interruptions, bottlenecks and extraordinary maintenance.

It is a system that ensures high quality at low costs, extremely easy to run, even by an unskilled operator, and provides smart solutions, capable of producing a great variety of pieces, from the mass production of panels ready to be assembled to the “batch one” production. All thanks to the use of standard machines, totally reliable, high-performing and easy to use and configure.

The cell system includes the Flexstore EL standard panels storage system. The storage system receives orders digitally and production starts automatically. The Flextore EL storage system consists in fact of two units that operate simultaneously. For high-capacity production of panels the SCM Sigma 67 panel-saw is put into use to cut packs of panels. For the production of more complex parts, the SCM Pratix S CNC machining centre with nesting capabilities is used. This line is controlled by a robot which, aided by a software-controlled camera, picks up the nested panel and transfers it to the Solution XD Edgebander. Thanks to its automated changeover capabilities, the Solution XD can edgeband as many edges as required ensuring unparalleled quality. Upon exiting the edgebander, the panel is transferred, again by the robot, to the Cyflex HP drilling centre to complete the production process of the required piece. The process concludes with the panels exiting along roller conveyors ready to be delivered to the customer.

This entire process is run by the Watch software supervisor, which oversees all production phases from the issuing of the order to distributing the proper programmes to the machines. The Watch supervision system, a typical Industry 4.0 element, is designed to be “open” to customers’ ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) data systems.

This is a simple and functional solution made possible thanks to the use of an high-tech application that allows one to calculate exact flows and processing times, ensuring a fast and reliable return on investment. This cell system fully satisfies the OEE (Overall Equipment Efficiency) specifications.
With this cell system, SCM Group provides an industrial solution to the problem of customised production, meeting the needs of companies that are required to supply customised products, in a short time, with a limited number of operators available and with low production costs.
