A luxury Dutch beach house, built using Accoya® – the world-leading modified wood by Accsys Technologies has demonstrated how tough and resilient the product is after overcoming punishing North Sea weather for five years without showing signs of age or disrepair.
Inspections five years after Breakers Beach House opened a restaurant and bar located in Noordwijk, revealed no signs of rot or decay, exemplifying the quality and durability of Accoya wood.
Designed to fit with the classic wooden architecture of the Noordwijk coastline, Breakers required a building material able to withstand extreme North Sea weather conditions, without the need for frequent maintenance. For these reasons, constructors recommended the use of Accoya for the windows, doors, cladding, railings, posts and planters at Breakers.
Built in 2010 and forming part of the five-star Grand Hotel Huis Ter Duin, the sea facing restaurant, was clad with Accoya, one of the most durable and stable woods available. The cladding was profiled, factory coated and installed with a translucent Sikkens Natural Balance coating system. The coating is backed by a 12 year guarantee, while the wood itself will last at least 50 years, ensuring minimal maintenance is required throughout the lifetime of the cladding.
In the past five years the Accoya cladding at Breakers has not suffered from any wear or decay, despite the harsh weather conditions including heavy driving rain and battering winds. The product matches and exceeds the properties of tropical hardwood – making it ideal for high-specification external applications such as Breakers.
Speaking after the five year inspection, Eline van Leeuwen, director of joinery firm Van Leeuwen kozijnen, who constructed the cladding, said: “We initially chose Accoya to clad Breakers as we wanted a material that required minimal maintenance but offered high aesthetic qualities to complement the design of the building. Accoya offered all of this and more.
The product is Class 1 durability rated and comes with a 50 year guarantee when used above-ground. Accoya is also environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and has a significant reduction in shrinkage and expansion compared to its competitors. Looking at the restaurant now, we are extremely pleased with our choice. The appearance of Accoya with the Sikkens paint finish remains consistent on all sides of the building’s façade. It still looks as good as new.”
