DREMA to host woodworking attraction this year

 Friday, July 22, 2016

dremaAll amateurs of modes of water transport as well as products made of wood will be able to experience a great attraction during this year’s Drema! In Pavilion 3 during 4 trade fair days, one will have an opportunity to see both the replica of a barge from the 15th Century as well a photo exhibition prepared by a traveller and sawmill worker- Wacław Witkowski.

Member of the Polish Economic Chamber of Wood Industry – Mr Wacław Witkowski from Tartak Witkowscy located in Rychłowice near/Wieluń, on the basis of excavations of a barge, designed and executed by medieval carpenters and boat builders, found by archaeologists from the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk, decided to build a replica. He adjusted the dimensions of the replica to capabilities of inexpensive road transport, which constitutes a diminution of the original in scale 3:1.

Replica of an old boat with a graceful name Wanda is almost perfect – frames were made of trunks with roots of old oaks, from which they were partially hand-cut to keep the curvature and natural arrangement of fibres.

Those natural arches between trunks and roots ensured such inclination of barge’s sides as was used in the Middle Ages. The barge is incredibly tight – and it is also sealed in traditional, used centuries ago, way with tarred rope hammered in a special gap between oak boards of the shell. The most frequent place where such boats leak – at the junction of sides and bottom – here does not exist, because the lowest board of the side is in the shape of a letter L and it itself partially constitutes the bottom. The barge also has a sculpture on the bow – of Wanda, of course. The only deviation from the tradition are two engines which are helpful on windless days.
