BVRio Responsible Timber Exchange and the Liberia Timber Association (LTA) hosted on April 26, 2017 at the Tera Cotta Conference hall, Congo Town, Monrovia, a workshop to promote the Responsible Timber Exchange as a tool to screen out illegal timber traded from Liberia and promote it in international markets. The LTA was represented by its President and the Head of Secretariat. BVRio was represented but BVRio’s Regional Coordinator West Africa, Mr James Parker.
The workshop was attended by over 35 participants made up of:
• Representatives of timber producing companies;
• Government officials from the Forestry Development Authority;
• Representatives from FLEGT and VPA support office;
• Representative from SGS; and
• Representatives from NGOs
This meeting was organized as part of the UK’s Forest Governance, Markets and Climate Programme.
The Liberian timber industry is gradually recovering from the prolong civil war (1989-2003). The Industry currently exports about 518,000 m3 of timber mainly logs annually with value of about 34.2 million US dollars. Common commercial species include Azobé (Lophira alata), Niangon (Heritiera utilis), Bossé (Guarea cedrata), Iroko (Milicia excelsa), Ayous (Triplochiton scleroxylon) and Dabema (Piptadeniastrum africanum). The main exports are to China and Europe.
The Liberia Timber Association (LTA) is an association of logging companies in Liberia with the objective of engaging the Liberian government and all stakeholders in constructively seeking new avenues in improving the forest industry for the betterment of society.
