Baumer sets new standard with ColourBrain®Furniture 4.0

 Monday, February 3, 2020

With the installation of the first inspection system ColourBrain®Furniture 4.0 at Pantarei srl. in Italy, Baumer sets new standards in the quality control of furniture components. The system allows the furniture manufacturer to offer best quality of his products. To achieve consistently precise inspection results over various furniture decors and structures-in the past, ColourBrain®had to be set and calibrated at great expense. With a broad production and product spectrum, these tasks sometimes required long commissioning times and intensive instruction of the operator.

In the latest generation, the ColourBrain®Furniture4.0system enables simple classification into a handful of predefined decor and structure groups with quality templates. This allows a fast commissioning of the inspection system without interruption of the production. Once installed, the system detect even very small defects almost independently of decor, structure and feed direction. It is able to visually subtract a surface structure from the decor. Therefore, the system also detects physical defects such as scratches and cracks on structured surfaces, which was difficult in the past to distinguish. The new graphical user interface also enables the user to access easily to all information and make parameter settings via touchscreen functions.

In just a few hours, simple, intuitive functions allow the operator to manage the system independently. Quality guaranteed ColourBrain® Furniture 4.0was installed and commissioned in less than a week at Pantarei. Since then, the system is checking the quality of the top and bottom sides of furniture components directly after an IMA-Klessmann edge banding machine. In this way Pantarei guarantees a high quality of their furniture parts -according to objective criteria and without intensive personnel input. Pantarei no longer monitors panels manually, but automatically and ejects them in the event of faults. The Q-Live® quality management software ColourBrain® Furniture 4.0enables classification into defined decor and structure groups using quality templates supports process optimization with powerful reporting, helps to reduce the use of resources and better plan the supply chain to the customer.

Efficient use of resources in addition to serial production, ColourBrain®Furniture4.0is particularly suitable for batch size 1 production. Early defect detection on almost any surface and easy handling of decors and structures enable the system to eject faulty furniture components from the production process before they enter the edge banding machine cycle. The result is an efficient use of production resources. A ColourBrain® ReworkStation, which serves as a decision support, supplements the batch size 1 production. After scanning, all inspected components are provided with a barcode and the underlying defect protocols are stored in the Q-Live® database. Faulty components are ejected at a defined location using I/O signals and the defects are queried using barcodes. The person responsible for quality is now directly shown the defect type and the position. The assessment as to whether reworking is possible or must be carried out can be made quickly. A combination of several production lines in one reworking station is possible. This direct intervention in the manufacturing process enables backlogs in production to be eliminated quickly and efficiently.
